Too great a misunderstanding

The author has some talent but the preponderance of mistakes and misunderstanding is too great for me to ignore. This book is best classified as juvenilia. Where or how it fits into ongoing discussions of feminism, antifeminism, pro porn and antiporn, gender relationships and identity, etc., I leave it to you to decide if you read this book.

Should you read this book? I think you can find interest and/or pleasure in reading it, as long as you are aware of a few problems.

Despite the number of times these stories have been edited, revised, and published there is at least one area that may harm the innocent or underinformed reader. Safe sex is lifesaving. In several stories, condoms appear and disappear in the same scene progression -- and of course the heroines sometimes scream for the male to achieve orgasm inside the female. The author simply forgets, through many iterations of publishing, that sex was safe in one paragraph and then unsafe in the next. Second, there are sexual positions or acts that absolutely require artificial lubricant -- no one from porn star to virgin doesn't require lubricant. If, as a few characters do in the stories --and I'm tempted to say all of them, but I may have lost count -- you attempt this act without plenty of lubricant, patience and communication, you will, not might, you WILL cause all sorts of bodily injury.

This is a book of fiction. Due to the frequent mistakes and misinformation, I am tempted to say that this is not an autobiographical account in the strictest sense. Do not try the depicted acts at home, not without a lot of supplemental sex education.

A parting thought or two from someone who is sympathetic to the need for a great deal more discussion about gender relationships with regard to sexual experiences. The author portrays many variations on the basic human dilemma of sex, all without stridently -- or otherwise -- claiming one or the other gender is at fault. Refusing to read this book completely and fairly may provide grist for your personal ideological windmill, but you do the author a great injustice ignoring her sometimes nuanced thought.

The biggest misconception about sex, and especially about gender identity and stereotypes, is that all people need to do 99.9 percent of the time is simply show up and sex will be either satisfying or not depending on irrelevant factors such as gender, experience, attitudes, enthusiasm, etc etc. Without working at communicating with one another, and being both honest and nonjudgmental, you might as well have stayed home, alone. Quantity of sexual experiences will not fill the void of dissatisfaction. Thinking you need a lot of sexual partners or even a great deal of sex within a day or week or whatever, is more to do with performance anxiety -- yes, among women too, all of you who like this author are extremely passive during sex, no matter how often she might initiate the process or scream or act aggressively.

Keep these things in mind as you read this very flawed but still interesting book. How might the characters or the author have been better off with a little reciprocity, giving as well as taking, kindness and generosity and respect for another -- and what the limitless potential might be if you worked as hard at reciprocating pleasure than merely showing up for someone else to slave away for your ideas about pleasure.

Rising Above Genre (for the most part)

In Little Cat, Tamara Faith Berger attempts, with a great deal of success, to take the genre of pornographic writing and blend or elevate it with elements of literary fiction.

When the two novellas in this collection (Lie With Me, and The Way of the Whore) are the most successful is not when the prose exhibits the pure mannerisms of pornography. Rather, it is when Berger takes the vast, strange, twisted and grand topic of human female sexuality and twists our view of it on its head, creating new angles, giving the reader fresh viewpoints and unusual, disturbing vistas of this all too human pursuit we think we know so well.

That is when these two book rises above the confines, demands and expectation of the genre. We get more than titillation. We get a writer exploring one of the most common of human pursuits in novel, odd, exciting ways.

Biological markers of exposure, disease susceptibility, and disease itself are used in many studies and methods of statistical analysis have been further developed. All of these developments have been considered in writing the Second Edition.
The authors cover the full scope of observational studies, describing in detail cohort studies, case-control studies, cross-sectional studies, and epidemic investigation. The use of statistical procedures is described in easy-to-understand terms. Sample size estimation, sampling, measurement, and measurement error are fully discussed. Each chapter in the second edition has been updated and several chapters have been expanded. Chapter 3, which summarizes sources of data on disease occurrence, includes several additional sources of data. Chapter 5, which describes modifications of traditional study designs, now contains nested case-control and case-cohort studies. Chapter 15, on other types of measurement, has been expanded to include sections on measurement in epidemiologic studies of the elderly and on biological markers since these have become major areas of epidemiologic research in recent years. Much of the material in Chapters 6, 7, and 9 on the analysis of data from epidemiologic studies is also new to this edition.
Perhaps the greatest challenge for the authors in writing this Second Edition was to make some of the modern, frequently used methods of statistical analysis understandable to readers with a limited mathematical or statistical background. Although this book is intended for readers who have had introductory courses in epidemiology and biostatistics, even readers who do not fully comprehend the theory behind some of the techniques should understand the rationale for their use and be able to interpret results when they appear on a computer printout or in the literature. The Second Edition of this widely used text will serve as a practical resource for students and practitioners of epidemiology, public health and biostatistics.

This story pivots on the relationship between Kendall Deaton Burnwood, an idealistic public defender, and U.S. Marshal John McGrath, who is returning her to Prosper, S.C., as a material witness when their car crashes into a ravine in Georgia. With her three-month-old in tow, Kendall tries repeatedly to abandon John, who's hobbled by temporary amnesia and a leg injury. Kendall fears the town of Prosper for good reason: it's where she witnessed her husband and father-in-law, ringleaders of a white-supremacist vigilante group, ritualistically execute one of her clients. Evading Matt and Gibb Burnwood as well as the FBI, Kendall is also pursued across the South by the Crook twins, vengeful brothers of a disgruntled client whose idea of a celebration is a drinking binge and the deflowering of a 12-year-old niece. First things first: This book is not new, it's twenty years old, and and if you enjoy Brown's newer books this one might be a tough pill to swallow as it was for me. She has gotten much better with time, at least in providing a suspense story you don't roll your eyes for every five minutes.

I just could not suspend disbelief long enough to enjoy this book. Kendall gets rescued and taken directly to the hospital -- but somewhere in there she managed to hide a large amount of money and a weapon along the way that shows up later? She moved to a town where every male is completely chauvinistic, quietly runs over any decision she makes, and decides to marry one of the very people who questioned her ability to do her job because she was a woman -- but is then surprised when he insults her best friend and starts putting down her abilities because she's a woman again? She's with our hero all of five days and decides she loves him? And the villain's whole thread was just completely over the top. Honestly the portrayal of nearly all of the men in this book was a bit insulting to men.. >.>

I was really confused at the quality of this considering how much I've enjoyed Brown's most recent books, until I ran into a passage where the hero declares he was born in '56 and went to look up the original publishing date (1996). This was probably comparably really good then, and I can see why people would have some nostalgia for it, but reading it for the first time in 2016 did not go over well.

Hanging on the edge of every page

Brown always uses pop culture references, this helps her readers connect to the story and characters, but it also dates her older stories. I read and love them despite the sometimes awkward 80s, 90s, early 2000s feel of them. This story is a plot twisting rollercoaster filled with bad guys doing bad things. I loved the romance plot in this story as well. Next on your read list should be "The Exclusive" and "Play Dirty".

I loved this book, you need to suspend reality a bit to read and enjoy it though. The negative reviews all complained about the stereotype characters, but I think the author used some of them as tongue in cheek. Good read, surprise ending.

I can't believe this is all hiding in Nebraska

It's amazing to think that these treasures reside to the west -- I had no idea, and neither did any of my contemporaries that this mecca for golf existed. Thanks to the author for bringing it to us. I did inquire why more pictures don't exist of the Sand Hills Golf Club and discovered that they were not allowed. So the poor reviews on Amazon below don't reflect the effort this author went to to put them in the book. I thought the book overall was just great and a very nice gift to several of my golfing friends. They loved it.
I've read some of the other reviews on golf books and there are definitely golf snobs out there. Get over yourselves.

Poor Quality Pictures

Good content in the book, with the "history" of multiple Sandhill golf courses. I thought it would be a little more appealing to the eye. I was expecting mostly a picture book, which it somewhat it, however the quality of the pictures is very poor. Some are better than others, but some look like they were taken with a cheap camera phone. Definitely not the quality I would expect from a $30 book.

A Disappointing and Amateurish Effort

This book over-promised and woefully undelivered. It is basically a $30 brochure for Jack Nicklaus' Dismal River Club, including 11 pictures of author Dean Kratz, his children, and his grandchildren. In that regard, Golf in the Nebraska Sand Hills is not only a tremendous disappointment, but a huge missed opportunity.

The star of this book *should* have been the world-renowned Sand Hills Golf Club, but Kratz saw fit to include only two low-resolution, 3½" x 5" pictures of part of the course. Worse, most of his research on Sand Hills was second- or third-hand. Almost no descriptions of playing the course are included. Kratz even wasted one chapter summarizing where Sand Hills ranks in other people's "best of" lists.

Instead, Kratz spent most of his time on Dismal River, the club where he is obviously a member and about which he attempted to wax poetic. Kratz even wasted eight pages on how five-time Open champion Tom Watson had staked out a preliminary plan for a second course. After five paragraphs, he finally revealed that the design job went to Tom Doak, instead. Talk about bait-and-switch!

Similarly, the author apparently could not be bothered to travel to the Prairie Club in Valentine or Ballyneal near Holyoke, Colorado. Virtually all of the information about those course comes second-hand, although Kratz was at least smart enough to include photography by Mark Adamson (Prairie Club) and Dick Durrance II (Ballyneal).

Kratz apparently did not want to be caught dead slumming at several excellent public-access courses across the region. He managed to grind out four very insufficient paragraphs about Wild Horse in Gothenburg, but with no original research or even an interview with architects Dan Axland and Dave Proctor. Not surprisingly, the author also ignored Axland and Proctor's Bayside Golf Course near Brule, Jeffrey Brauer's Highlands GC in Lincoln, and Jim Engh's Awarii Dunes near Axtell.

The author clearly attempted to edit his own book, because the writing is stilted in some places, while some amateurish misspellings made it into print ("Jack Nichlaus" on page 147). Kratz's own photography from Dismal River was reasonable in a couple of places, but completely irrelevant and very badly executed in others.

Do *not* spend $30 on this book, period. If you can find it used for $5 to $10, then it would be an interesting curiousity as far as Dismal River is concerned. Simply put, Dean Kratz is the Barack Obama of golf writers.

Great Pictures and History

This book provides a lot of historical information from Egypt, Greeks, to roman art..it is an exquisite book. I recommend this book. :P. It provides many art pictures and dates estimated to the time periods of the art. Its a really easy read, i needed this book for a Art class and learned a lot from it.

Pimsleur Mandarin

Pimsleur's approach is very helpful in building conversational competency quickly through easily learning the 2500 most commonly used words, hearing them spoken by native speakers, and allowing students to try their hand at realistic conversations.
