About the Author

Bill Nye is a scientist, engineer, comedian, and inventor. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University where he studied under Carl Sagan, and worked on the 747 as an engineer at Boeing before creating and hosting his much-loved Emmy award-winning PBS/Discovery Channel show Bill Nye the Science Guy. He holds six Honorary Doctorate degrees from Lehigh University, Willamette University, Quinnipiac University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Goucher College, and Johns Hopkins, and teaches at Cornell regularly as a visiting professor.

Corey S. Powell is the former editor in chief of American Scientist and Discover, where he is currently editor at large and continues to write the "Out There" column and blog. He is also a visiting scholar at NYU's SHERP science journalism program, as well as a freelance writer for Popular Science, Smithsonian, Nautilus, and Aeon; his article "The Madness of the Planets" appears in The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2014. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife, two daughters, and a small collection of Permian-era fossils. "Undeniable" is in outstanding book in defense of science and the grand theory of evolution. It's a love of science and his quest to spread awareness of the ways evolution impacts our lives and what is at stake for all of us. Mechanical engineer, science educator, and Emmy award-winning TV personality Bill Nye the Science Guy provides readers with a gem. This enjoyable 320-page book includes thirty-seven chapters that cover a wide-range of topics pertaining to evolution.

Positives:
1. Entertaining, well-written and well-researched book for the masses.
2. A great topic, the grand theory of evolution and how it shapes our lives.
3. A charming and engaging tone throughout.
4. This book oozes of love for science and the admiration for one of the greatest theories ever devised. "Evolution is one of the most powerful and important ideas ever developed in the history of science. It describes all of life on Earth."
5. Bill Nye is an educator at heart and he is concerned for the well-being of our planet. This sentiment shines through clearly as the following statement illustrates when discussing the attack on reason. "This attack on reason is an attack on all of us. Children who accept this ludicrous perspective will find themselves opposed to progress. They will become society's burdens rather than its producers, a prospect that I find very troubling."
6. Debunks many lies portrayed by creationists, like the second law of thermodynamics. "The Second Law applies only to closed systems, like a cylinder in a car engine, and Earth is not even remotely a closed system. Transfers of matter and energy are constantly taking place. Life here is nothing like a perpetual motion machine, but neither is it like a ball rolling inexorably downhill."
7. Does a wonderful job of describing how evolution works. "Nature is self-organizing. That's another way of defining evolution: Nature builds ecosystems, in all of their complex glory, from the bottom up."
8. Keeps even the most complex topics accessible for the public. As an example provides an enlightening chapter on how to determine deep time. "It's just a little over a century since the French physicist Henri Becquerel discovered radioactivity, and with it the key to unlocking deep time."
9. A very good explanation on why the inheritance of acquired traits was wrong and what Lamarck actually got right. "Evolution happens as each generation of living things interacts with its environment and reproduces. Lamarck got at least that part of it right. Those natural designs that survive to reproduce pass on their genes. Those that don't successfully reproduce disappear; their genes disappear as well. It's survival of the hang-in-there's, or the made-the-cuts, or the just good-enoughs."
10. An interesting and even humorous look at sexual selection.
11. A look at artificial selection. "Darwin coined the phrase `artificial selection' to describe what human gardeners, farmers, and horse and dog breeders had been doing for centuries: creating better or more useful varieties of animals and plants."
12. Provocative but never disrespectful. "How can you take the lack of evidence of a plan as evidence of a plan? That makes no sense."
13. A fascinating look at biodiversity. "The areas of Earth with the most energy input are also the areas with the most biodiversity."
14. Explains why most living things never get fossilized.
15. A look at mass extinctions. "Industrial emissions are one way humans are changing this planet, but not the only way. We are also directly killing countless species at a rate that dwarfs the rates estimated in the previous Big Five extinctions. We are killing them mostly by destroying their habitats."
16. Geneticist Theodosius Dobzhansky's influence. "Nothing in Biology Makes Sense Except in the Light of Evolution."
17. Many examples of poor "design". "Your windpipe (trachea) is right next to your food tube (esophagus), making it easy to choke. What's up with that? Couldn't that have been improved?"
18. Does a commendable job of explaining micro versus macro evolution. "The processes of microevolution and macroevolution are fundamentally the same, only the scale is different."
19. Many examples of the importance of understanding evolution. "For instance, we've discovered that cancer evolves. Cancer cells can mutate in the body of a patient, so that malignant cells find new ways to get a supply of blood and become resistant to our anticancer drugs."
20. An excellent chapter on genetically modified foods. It's one of my favorites. "So for me, evolutionary theory informs our decisions about GMOs."
21. A great chapter on skin colors. "In general, the closer people live to the equator, the more ultraviolet exposure they receive and the darker their average skin color."
22. Much more...

Negatives:
1. There are more substantive books on evolution (see my further recommendations) but few as charming and enjoyable to read.
2. A few sketches but overall lacking in visual content (graphs, timelines, and diagrams).
3. No notes.
4. No formal bibliography.

In summary, this is a wonderful book on the grand theory of evolution. Inspired by a debate with creationist Ken Ham, Bill Nye the Science Guy takes the reader on a delightful journey through popular topics concerning evolution and along the way teaches us the importance in understanding it. A tad on the accessible side of the equation but a wonderful book nonetheless. I highly recommend it!

Review from a former Jehovah's Witness

I was born into the Jehovah's Witness religion. I had twenty-nine brain washing indoctrinating years until one day I woke up and somehow saw "the matrix" for what it was and started thinking rationally while questioning the religions references and methods. I finally came to the realization that my religion was a cult. I am now thirty-four years old. In the short time that I have walked away from that "Faith", I decided to go to college and pursue degrees in things that always interested me. In a short sporadic 2.5 years, I attained an Associate's and Bachelor's degree while raising a family. This is a big no-no in that religion. Jehovah's Witnesses look down on education and even though they don't say you can't go to college, every time it is brought up it is in a bad light and described as a worldly place where bad association exists. College is for lovers of money and the greedy. Some go for two years for a technical degree which is almost shameful to other members.....if you go for four years...OH MY, you are never coming back!

Jehovah's Witness are taught to believe that EVERYTHING in the bible is to be taken literally. They even have their own book promoting Creationism titled, "Life--How Did It Get Here? By Evolution or by Creation?" The liberties, lies, and misquotes the religion took when writing this book are mind baffling. Richard Dawkins, Carl Sagan, Darwin and many more were grossly misinterpreted many times to make the organizations case for creationism look correct. All it takes is a quick google search to find the references to these atrocities.

In the time I have been out of organized religion, I have opened my mind and have been trying to seek answers that do not rely on faith but on concrete evidence. What I have learned in the last four years is astonishing. I now have a greater respect for my life, others, and all of my surroundings.

Bill Nye is an advocate for educating the young (and old), and we need more like him. Today's youth will eventually be making the big decisions that will affect the future of our planet. In my opinion, Mr. Nye's book is a great stepping stone to help others that might have been in similar shoes as me. It takes information that is sometimes hard to process and hones it enough that anyone "nine to ninety" can learn the basics of why creationism is laughable. Nye does it in a way that is heartfelt and nonjudgmental. I wanted to thank Mr. Nye for taking on this touchy subject and giving believers in creationism a healthy dose of SCIENCE!

10 Years Out of Date and Somewhat Patronizing

Pros: VERY easy to read. Written and perhaps a sixth grade level. Nye is friendly and likable. Hats off to his editor who did a great job.

Cons: Seems unable to resist taking repeated swipes at Ken Ham and Creationists, as though that's the only group of people in the world who take issue with various aspects of Darwinism. Makes misleading caricatures of evolution skeptics. Perhaps one shouldn't expect any different.

However the real problem with this is book is that Nye's version of evolution pretends as though the last 30 years of microbiology simply never happened at all. The version of evolution he espouses in this book has been obsolete for at least ten years.

He has a chapter about Lamarck in which he criticizes the 19th century scientist for being wrong about progeny inheriting acquired characteristics from their parents - but he only mentions epigenetics once and he never informs the reader that epigenetics has now vindicated Lamarck! (Look it up.)

Either 1) he doesn't know this, or 2) he belongs to the group of old-school Neo-Darwinists who are still holding out, hoping epigenetics will somehow go away. (Dawkins in his book disdains epigenetics, claiming that it's merely enjoying "15 minutes of fame.")

To Nye's credit, he does not advocate the now-dead Junk DNA theory. (On the other hand, neither does he point out that the Junk DNA theory has been overturned. No mention of the ENCODE project.)

He says evolutionary mutations come from "imperfect copying of the DNA strand." We now know this is false, and that evolutionary mutations are changes induced by the cell itself in response to signals from the environment.

There is no mention of the amazing error checking and error correction systems in cells. No mention of transposition (cells re-arranging their DNA) or symbiogenesis (cells inside of cells in cooperative partnership).

He has a chapter about how bacteria adapt to antibiotics - but no mention of horizontal gene transfer, and there's no real explanation of how this happens.

Which is to say he's given you virtually zero education about how evolutionary adaptations actually work. I'm surprised that a mechanical engineer would virtually ignore all the physical mechanisms of evolutionary change.

Meh. All in all a very surface level treatment of a topic that deserves better.

Anderson and Stewart offer an idiosyncratic black studies textbook that will generate significant discussion in the field. The book posits transdisciplinary African American studies emphasizing the need to transcend traditional academic and disciplinary categories and to incorporate what the authors call indigenous knowledge--distinctive ways of knowing that historically have been shared by African-descended people. The authors are explicitly activist in their approach to the teaching of the field, raising questions and advancing analyses that are capable of leading to improvements in the well-being of people of African descent. Nine chapters cover the history and theoretical foundations of black studies; the history of blacks in the US; black American society and culture, psychology, politics, economics, and arts; and science and technology's impact on shaping race and racism. Each chapter ends withQuestions and Exercises highlighting key themes and perspectives,and the authors provide thorough footnotes so readers can easily to to the sources. An extensive 32-page bibliography includes social science classics from the early 20th century, Internet references from 2007,and hundred of other relevant sources. Summing up: Highly recommended. About the Author
Talmadge Anderson was professor emeritus of the Department of Comparative American Cultures and Marketing at Washington State University. He was the founder and former editor of the Western Journal of Black Studies, a professional journal in African American and African Studies. His publications include the volume Black Studies: Theory, Methods, and Cultural Perspectives and numerous articles that examine various dimensions of the African American experience. James Stewart was professor of Labor Studies and Industrial Relations and African and African American Studies at Penn State University, where he was formerly vice provost for Educational Equity and director of the black studies Program. He has written over seventy articles and has authored and co-authored, or edited and co-edited ten books, one of which is a collection of essays about Africana studies, Flight in search of Vision. He is a former editor of the Review of Black Political Economy and a former president of both the National Economic Association and the National Council for Black Studies.

this book was extremely informative and i have a better understanding of the issues involved. the author really explained the subject of the african american experience with intelligence and sophistication. i would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the african american culture!

Outstanding insights and wisdom from plenty of business pros

Short, tightly written, lots of great stories.

Hattori's book is broken down into sections covering; dealing with yourself, growing with others, then managing processes, then going the extra mile, then becoming a thinker and writer.

This will give anyone better focus, better ideas and better results in their business life - whether your in a corporate environment or entrepreneurial.

McKinsey Edge is most highly recommended!

May not be official McKinsey but still pretty useful

I am reviewing a copy of "The McKinsey Edge" by Shu Hattori that I received at no cost through the Amazon Vine program.

I'll get to the point - I really like that Hattori focuses on improving the person (in this case, the consultant) as well as the team and business. While the book feels a little out of sync when talking about the consultant's nearly 24-hour day compared with my much shorter workday, I do appreciate his attentiveness to a person's energy and ability to focus.

His points on meetings and presentation are probably better than some advice but not necessarily suited for every situation. Much of the advice he offers isn't that different from what I've read elsewhere but to see it collected in one brief and accessible book makes this more of a go-to book than some of the other business and leadership advice books I've read.

I will say that this doesn't appear to be an official McKinsey publication. Rather, this is written from the perspective of someone who worked well and rose quickly through the ranks at McKinsey and then moved on, so take it as one person's perspective rather than a how-to book from McKinsey.

As a new manager I am always looking for books that can help me succeed and this is one of those that I read the first few pages on and instantly pulled out my highlighter and started marking quotes and sentences that I wanted to make sure I could come back to easily. The book is a quick read but it contains a lot of powerful information for leaders. I highly recommend this book if you are in a position of influence or want to be.

Hello and thank you for stopping by. We are excited to share with you the journey of writing this book. This is our first book, and it pretty much happened on accident. Well, maybe I should say that it was a "divine appointment" instead (that sounds much better and gives credit where credit is due).

Adam and I were looking to create a short 20-page eBook showcasing the common mistakes that we made throughout our journey in network marketing. As we began to brainstorm and put our memories down on paper, a flood of ideas and past faux pas literally began to overwhelm our notebooks.

Every night, when we would take our daughter out for an evening stroll, we would remember more and more. As we laid our heads down on our pillows, both of us would write our sections for each chapter in the notes section of our iPhones. The brightness of our screens would glow in our faces amidst the darkenss of the room, as we would pour our hearts into the creation of this book. In a matter of 2 months, we ended up with a 158-page book. We were amazed.

We were amazed for a couple reasons. First, we wrote the entire book in the notes sections of our iPhones. Wow, that just proves you don't need anything fancy to write a book, just a great idea that you are extremely passionate about. So, if you have a book inside you, and you haven't started on it yet, we hope that encourages you.

Second, we made so many mistakes throughout our network marketing career, and we still became successful! We were still able to create a lifestyle of freedom that we are so thankful for. If you only get one thing from reading this book, it's that you can fail over and over again, and still reach your dreams.

After this book was finished we printed about 1000 pre-launch copies. The feedback we were getting was tremendous, and it solidified the purpose of this book: to help people accelerate success, alleviate rejection and elevate the profession of network marketing.

The focus of our training platform was also birthed from this book (even though we started writing it for the training platform, I guess its a chicken and egg situation). That's why we consider this book a "divine appointment". All our past mistakes and moments of hurtful rejection are all serving a greater purpose that is beyond our own journey.

Our passion is to teach those, who have their hopes and dreams riding on a network marketing business, avoid the mistakes that we made so often. These are the very mistakes that caused us unnecessary rejection. These mistakes caused others to label us "That Guy". When people experience this type of rejection, many retreat from the fight for their dreams. We would have quit as well, but we had nowhere else to go.

You may relate to our journey. You may be new to network marketing, and you want to have success in your business without putting your reputation or relationships on the line. We have great news for you, it is definitely possible, and we will teach you exactly how you can build your business by honoring people.

Perhaps you're a leader, and you are tired of hopeful newbies doing the disappearing act on you, because the fear of rejection overwhelms them and keeps them from building their businesses.

"Helped me to believe too"

The book was the second book I purchased as an E-Book when I started in Network Marketing after "Your First Year in Network Marketing" by Mark Yarnell. Unfortunately I never got around to reading it until much later in my newfound profession. Reading this book was like a walk down memory lane. I have been guilty of at least 11 of the 21 Guys/Gals described in this book. Actually, probably more. I truly enjoyed the exercises at the end of each chapter that help drive action and confidence. My biggest take away was that is okay to be human and make mistakes and most importantly that we can learn from them. I am always amazed by the stories offered by top professionals in the industry like Adam and Michelle simply because they validate that ordinary people can and do succeed in this business just like in any other. By learning from their mistakes, persevering and believing in themselves, their products and their services. Thanks Michelle and Adam for bringing this book to life and helping me to believe too.

What can I say...awesome book. I wish I had this when I first started in MLM. I did it all wrong now I know why. Adam and Michelle use examples that are real life mistakes that I am sure we all made (and hope newer entrepreneurs will not make). This should be one of the first books you read on you path to personal development connected to MLM. It is quick and easy to read. I have the kindle version; should have purchased the actual book to dog ear and add notes. Love it!!!

Nick Alexander was born in 1964 in Margate, Kent. Really good read

The Photographer’s Wife is my third outing with Nick Alexander and he is turning out to be an author I really like. This is the story of Barbara and her daughter Sophie. Sophie is trying to persuade her mother to help her with an exhibition of her late father’s photography, something Barbara is reluctant to get involved with and for very good reasons.
The story is told in two time frames, and I particularly loved the parts of the book that told Barbara’s life story. We first meet her as a five year old during the blitz and follow her throughout her life until the present day in a fantastic series of “snapshots” of family life during the second half of the twentieth century. It has a very authentic feel to it and I really liked the author’s attention to detail. During these sections we follow Barbara’s life with Tony and very slowly all the family’s secrets are revealed to us, if not to Sophie herself. They are very subtly brought to the fore as the author takes us almost to the point of reveal and then leads us to draw our own conclusions. Barbara is a fabulous character who really grows throughout the read and I really liked her.
By contrast, it took me a while to “get” Sophie. I never really got a clear mental picture of her in my head and was wondering for some time as to how old she is. She is actually in her forties but she never felt like someone of that age, but came across as someone much younger. I had similar feelings about her boyfriend Brett. We are told he is American but I never felt like I was reading about an American, apart from the times he said “Gee”. I also found it difficult to age him, and it was only the fact that he was going bald that gave me any clues, although that in itself is not necessarily conclusive. From the moment we met him he just came across as a slimy sleezeball and I could never understand what Sophie saw in him.
However, putting that to one side, this is a story that really captured my imagination and drew me in; one that I thoroughly enjoyed.

So sad to have finished this book ! Abslutely loved it and couldn't put it down. Have already recommended it to several friends and ordered it as a present for my daughter. Congratulations Nick ! Another wonderful read.

About the Author

Jerry H. Bentley was professor of history at the University of Hawai`i and editor of the Journal of World History. He wrote extensively on the cultural history of early modern Europe and on cross-cultural interactions in world history, including Humanists and Holy Writ: New Testament Scholarship in the Renaissance (1983), and Politics and Culture in Renaissance Naples (1987), and in later years, concentrated on global history and particularly on processes of cross-cultural interaction, resulting in Old World Encounters: Cross-Cultural Contacts and Exchanges in Pre-Modern Times (1993) and Shapes of World History in Twentieth-Century Scholarship (1996). He passed away in 2012.

Yoko Ono is a seminal figure in the development of Conceptual art, performance and Fluxus, as well as film and new music. These works--conceptual instructions--are the culmination of a process that dispensed with the physical and arrived at the idea.
Since the initial publication of Grapefruit, numerous expanded editions have been produced in many different languages. Today first-edition copies are nearly impossible to find. The Museum of Modern Art has now produced a facsimile of that first edition, making it available again in its original form. This slipcased paperback is produced from the copy of the 1964 book in The Museum of Modern Art Library. It is an exacting replica of Grapefruit as Ono first envisioned it.
Born in Tokyo in 1933, Yoko Ono moved to New York in the mid-1950s and became a critical link between the American and Japanese avant-gardes. Ono's groundbreaking work greatly influenced the international development of Conceptual art, performance art and experimental film and music. In celebration of Ono's 80th birthday in 2013, the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt organized a major traveling retrospective.

Great book by a misunderstood artist

Since 1968, Yokophobia has prevented people from perceiving reality correctly. Yokophobia was brought on largely because John Lennon was "supposed" to marry a white woman, oh, and, another thing, because the Beatles broke up. Since she has been blamed for this, shattering the delusion that a rock band should last forever (look at the Rolling Stones now for goodness sake!), people have been unusually mean-spirited in their assessment of her work. I can understand why people shy away from her more avant-garde musical output, often consisting of ear-shattering screams (I am one of those sickos that just happens to love it!). But "Grapefruit," one of the most widely distributed pieces of Fluxus-connected/inspired "performance art," is simply irresistible. (Remember, Yoko had a career as an avant-garde artist before she met John Lennon--they met at one of her art exhibits in 1967.) It is serious, excruciatingly humorous and regularly induces smiles--all while simultaneously encouraging its readers to think abstractly, artistically, creatively and irreverently. "Grapefruit" is a breath of fresh sky-blue air from the woman who once asked (on the b-side of John Lennon's "Instant Karma") "Who Has Seen the Wind?"
"Grapefruit" is filled, for the most part, with short, koan-like "pieces" such as "Wall Piece for Orchestra." Yoko directs the piece as follows: "Hit a wall with your head." In "Overtone Piece," Yoko writes, "Make music only with overtones." In the painting pieces section, she instructs her reader, in "Painting for the Wind," to "Make a hole. / Leave it in the wind." In the "events" section, probably the closest here to her performance art, she evokes a giggly pun on "peace" (or maybe "pee") in "Pea Piece," writing, "Carry a bag of peas. / Leave a pea wherever you go." If you find this type of humor and "artistic direction" a waste of time, which many undoubtedly will, then avoid this like the plague. But if you, like me, find this darkly humorous, refreshingly perverse and instructive as to how to live life seriously without taking it too seriously, then "Grapefruit" should find a place on your bookshelf, or, better yet, on your nightstand.

Master Piece

I bought this book in England in 1970 when it was released with the charming cover of a grapefruit atop a female posterior.
I loved the book and kept it rather than follow Yoko's instructions to burn it afterward.
Yesterday I read it again. It is funny how one's perceptions change over thirty years for better or for worse.
My conclusion is that this book is a Master Piece.

About the Author
Catherine Dowling is one of the leading writers in the field of breathwork psychotherapy. Her book, Rebirthing and Breathwork: A Powerful Technique for Personal Transformation, is essential reading for students of breathwork therapy and has attracted thousands of readers to breathwork as their path of spiritual and psychological development.

Catherine is a former president of the International Breathwork Foundation in addition to being a founder and former chairperson of the Irish Rebirthing Psychotherapy Association and co-founder of the Federation of Irish Complementary Therapy Associations.

As the author of influential articles on the training of therapists, she was one of the developers of the International Breathwork Training Alliance, a standard setting body for breathworkers based in Wisconsin. Don't hold your breath

First I must declare my bias since I know the writer personally.

That said, anyone wanting to make a fresh start and try something new, is making a wise choice. For veterans or newbies, this book guides you through the steps to realize your full potential.

The author's easy style and encouraging voice, helps ease the reader into into a unique realm of self discovery and growth.

There are masses of fascinating facts for the technically minded and helpful advice for the struggling.

And now it's on Kindle, I cannot resist.

Fantastic

As a Rebirther and Rebirther trainer my self for 35 years I found this book informative not only for the beginner but also long time Rebirther s like myself. Her explanations of the process and her client examples went into great detail and were clearly explained I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering beginning on a Rebirthing journey I thank the author Catherine Dowling for making this book available to the world wide public
