"Best Sports Medicine Book I've Ever Used! August 22, 2001; Reviewer: A reader from Vancouver, B.C. Canada; The Second edition of Clinical Sports Medicine is the best reference book I have come across as an athletic therapist and professional fitness and lifestyle consultant. I find it very easy to navigate with great illustrations and information. The references are all very recent and evidence-based so you feel confident in following the authors' recommendations. It is particularly good value at 67 US dollars - most hardcover books of this size are about twice that price. The corresponding website has updated information, including relevant published papers, which I find quite helpful also. These authors have really done a fabulous job of classifying sports medicine information in a logical and easy-to-use format. I highly recommend it to anyone in the sports, fitness, and/or health fields! 2nd edition already a big hit, November 27, 2000; Reviewer: Karim Khan from Vancouver, BC Canada; Author review; The 2nd edition (2001) is now readily available worldwide. It contains 7 new chapters and every chapter has been fully updated. It contains practical guidelines for shoulder pain management (with Ben Kibler), new management of anterior knee pain (with Jenny McConnell) and guidelines as to how to teach pelvic stability for patients in treatment of back pain. It includes a complete update of management of tendon injuries incorporating recent advances in treatment (with Jill Cook, Hakan Alfredson, etc). Medical chapters include updates on drugs in sport, managing heat illness and ethics in sport. Large, practical chapters describe sports medicine care for the female athlete, the pediatric athlete, the disabled athlete and seniors. This 918 page hardcover 2nd edition, with over 900 illustrations, is extremely good value. We would argue the best value of any clinical sports medicine text, and this is reflected by this edition selling almost 10,000 copies already. The New Zealand Journal of Sports Medicine recently reviewed this edition and said 'The world's best sports medicine book just got better'....Check it out for yourself! Excellent practical book for clinicians, June 28, 2000; Reviewer: A reader from seatle, USA; This very practical book that uses symptom-oriented chapters to provide very helpful guidance to anyone who sees sports medicine patients. It is useful for physical therapists (like me) but my colleagues who are doctors and masseurs also use it. I thoroughly recommend it and find its illustrations of physical examination particularly useful.

Karim Khan, MD, PhD, FACSP, FSMA, FACSM, Dip Sport Med, is Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia, Canada, Consultant at the Allan McGavin SPorts Medicine Centre, and a Sports Physician at the Olympic Games, Sydney 2000.

Great book for military medicine!

I'm a new Physician Assistant in the US Army. As most military providers (particularly, Army and Marines) will tell you, we see a LOT of orthopedic and sports medicine injuries. I recently ordered this book as part of setting up my unit clinical library and it has quickly become a cornerstone of my practice. I see about 22-30 patients a day in a primary care setting, and 50-70% are orthopedic/sports medicine. I HIGHLY recommend this book, particularly to a military provider! It will fast become your best friend!

If I had to choose just one book to be on my shelf as a Primary Care Sportsmedicine Physician with a CAQ, this book would be it! Outstanding book in every way. Well written, concise with excellent illustrations and is evidence based. This book is written for the primary care FP to a fellowship trained sports medicine person. Great for all providers, PA's, NP's, ATC's and PT's......

Comprehensive and covers just about every topic in Sportsmedicine. Can't go wrong with this purchase.

Great Intro to the World of the Celts!

I bought this book at the last minute while looking for rune books (found one by the same author). The illustrations (something my other Celtic history books do not have) really drew me to this book.

The book itself is basic, but wonderfully done. It is a great intro for those just starting out in Celtic studies - the chapters being quick and to the point, as well as a quick reference for those more learned in Celtic history.

The illustrations and photography are beautiful, and coupled with the descriptions, just took me right into the world of the ancient Celts. I wanted to visit the British Isles before, but now, I'm aching for it!

The Sacred World of the Celts....Very Informative!

This book had more information than I expected. From the origins of the Celts to the more "modern" aspects of Celtic society. This book covers geography, history, crafts, legends, religion/spirituality, politics and more.
I would definitely recommend this book to someone who was looking for more than just the basics. The book provided me with a "jumping off point" for researching more about the subjects that interested me...a kind of a text book that gives you a broader overview on the subject.

Anyone wishing to begin an exploration into the history and traditions of the Celts will be delighted with this book. It will not overwhelm, yet it provides tons of information in a beatiful format. The photos are excellant. With Celtic history being as complex as it is, the book presents it in a way that is easily understandable.

It's nice to have Gerald Tarrant back!

C. S. Friedman confided that she had had an idea for a new Gerald Tarrant story when she agreed to contribute to Speculative Horizons, the anthology I compiled and edited for Subterranean Press last year. I was foaming at the mouth at the very thought, yet I knew that we could never afford to have that story in our anthology. In any event, she wanted to complete Legacy of Kings before tackling that new project.

And then, a few weeks ago, she let me know that the novella was done, edited, and she wanted to know if I wanted to be the first one to review it? Are you kidding me!?! "Hell yeah!" I said! And it was quite a treat, if only for 31 pages, to return to the world of the Coldfire trilogy and rediscover one of my favorite fantasy characters of all time!

It's been sixteen years since we last encountered Gerald Tarrant. Far too long for most Friedman fans around the world, I'm sure. But when asked about the possibility of additional short stories or novellas featuring that beloved protagonist, C. S. Friedman told me that this was a one-off. Unless other memorable and worthwhile ideas come to mind, there won't be more of them coming up. Which, as a matter of course, made me savour Dominion even more.

This being a novella, the format precluded too much depth in terms of worldbuilding. Still, Friedman sets the mood perfectly. The narrative grabs hold of you and won't let go. The prose is evocative and the Forest almost becomes a character in its own right. Sure, many will claim that fans are already won over. But it's no secret that the author knows how to draw readers into her tales and Dominion is no different.

The novella features the POVs of two protagonists. The first is, not surprisingly, that of Gerald Tarrant, first Neocount of Merentha. It was a veritable pleasure to revisit a character that has made such an impact on me during the 90s. Although the thirty pages or so don't provide enough of an opportunity to fully appreciate this chance to see Gerald Tarrant in action and witness events unfold through his eyes, I relished every single moment of it. And damn it, I want more! The second is that of Faith, last survivor of a band of knights of the Church hunting faeborn creatures in the Forest. She possesses a special gift known as the Earth's blessing; the fae does not respond to her. Both characters find themselves in the heart of the Forest; one trying to escape, while the other means to best it. I think Friedman created a good balance between the two POV sections throughout the novella.

The relatively short format means that there is not a dull moment from start to finish. Indeed, all too soon you come to the end, satisfied but begging for more. Considering Gerald Tarrant's complex past, one would think that there would be material for several prequels. And here's to hoping that Dominion will be the first of many short form works featuring him.

This novella is a small vignette of Gerald Tarrant's life prior to the Coldfire trilogy, one focusing on his conquest of the Forest. I enjoyed how the author introduced Amoril and how he became part of Tarrant's entourage.

All in all, Dominion is a fantastic read. If you are a C. S. Friedman fan and loved the Coldfire trilogy, this novella is definitely for you!

Entertaining prequel short story

Dominion is a novella by celebrated SFF writer Celia S. Friedman, it is a prequel to her seminal work that is "The Coldfire trilogy". The first book "Black Sun Rising" was released in 1991 and captured the interest and fascination of readers worldwide with its curious mix of science fiction and fantasy. Two sequels followed at a biennial rate and the author closed of the trilogy and the story of eclectic bunch of characters found within. I haven't read the trilogy but that is more due to laziness on my part rather than anything else. Also since this novella was a prequel, I thought of it as a perfect opportunity to begin my exploration of this evocative work.

The story has two protagonists namely Gerald Tarrant and Faith, the former is the first of a kind among mages, the latter the ultimate survivor of a hunting Knight force. They are polar opposites and are both drawn to a certain special forest that will test their fortitude. Gerald is drawn to it for the sole reason that it raises his curiosity by being a font of fae energy, which might have sentience. Faith on the other hand, doesn't have an exact clue about how she has landed there. Death however stalks both of them and one misstep will be all that it takes for the forest to claim dominion over both of them.

What is so good about this novella is that even though it is on the shorter side in matters of length, it does not waste any extra space in immersing the reader in the dark world of Erna. The setting and background information is quickly given to the reader without making it all to obvious and at the same time is the introduction of the dual POV threads which fuel the story. The pace of the plot is of the express kind but it does not hamper the characterization in any way, which just shows the proficient prose utilized. Another point about the characterization is that readers will be thoroughly invested in both characters and of course it's almost impossible not to be enamored by the Neocount whose actions, intellect & power are visible only as the tip of the iceberg. I know who the readers will most likely be rooting to achieve dominion (as was I) and that is another highlight for the novella to entrance the reader in such a small timeframe.

The novella is structured in such a way that its not hard to guess where it will end up but here's the beauty you can't exactly predict how it will end for both the protagonists (Obviously veteran fans of the Coldfire trilogy will know more about the fate of one of the POV characters). The twist in the end as well as the origin story of another character in the middle will be very much appreciated by pervious fans as I'm lead to believe that both plot twists are pivotal for certain events in the future trilogy. Overall this novella stands out for making it easy for fans & non-fans to get acquainted with it easily, with out losing out on the surprise factor that is often the downfall seen in most prequels due to the nature of the stories. I don't think I have any feedback of the dissenting kind for this story as it simply caught me off guard with its sheer excellence and it shames me to say that I haven't yet read the Coldfire trilogy in spite of owning all the three books.

CONCLUSION: C.S Friedman's Dominion is nothing short of a brilliant way to get new readers exposed to her seminal trilogy and other works. Do yourself a favor and read this novella if you are looking for dark fantasy and a protagonist who is quite simply the perfect embodiment of an antihero. Dominion is a must read for all fans of the darker turn of the fictional worlds, so go meet the Neocount and be prepared to amazed.

The title says it all

Dominion is the perfect title for this prequel novella to C.S. Friedman's Coldfire trilogy. It fills in some of the holes in Tarrant's missing past between his initial fall from grace to the fateful meeting with the Reverend Vryce. It is a short story, so it is very focused on the pull of the Forest and Tarrant's battle to dominate that dark power and make it his own. It is told from two completely different points of view, thus giving the reader an immersive perspective of just how dangerous, and beautiful, the Forest is.

The novella does have its drawbacks. As other reviews mentioned, it is a very short read. It leaves you with even more questions and more holes to fill. An unfamiliar character is introduced, endowed with a special ability not mentioned (that I remember) in the trilogy, who is in the end discarded - nothing more than a messenger of Tarrant's ominous declaration. What happens to her, and more importantly, her ability? Another drawback is the ultimate showdown between Tarrant and the Forest. With the goal of domination over such a strong force, one would expect a battle of epic proportions. This is not the case. Like the story itself, it is short, sweet, and to the point as to be almost anticlimactic. I said almost.

Friedman is no lightweight when it comes to writing. Despite the story's brevity, it is a well-written work that keeps the reader engaged from start to finish. Tarrant is the character you love to hate, and anyone with an interest in the Coldfire trilogy will enjoy learning more about this devil incarnate. We can only hope that Friedman will not leave the fans of Erna hanging for too long with more stories of this strange and wonderful place she has created.

A great introduction to the speeches of Cicero

Although this commentary on one of the most interesting and enjoyable of Cicero's speeches for the modern reader is heavily slanted to the needs of US students for Advanced Placement Latin, it is nevertheless a great introduction to the speeches of Cicero for anyone learning Latin anywhere. There is a lot of help with grammar and vocabulary, and the methodical way in which the structure of Cicero's periods (long, involved sentences) is explained is particularly clear and helpful. The introductory sections giving the context and historical background to the speech are reasonably comprehensive without being unduly detailed. The notes draw fairly heavily on Professor Austin's Oxford University Press commentary, to which reference is made on more detailed points. However, Austin's edition is for the more learned. For anyone still in the Latin learning process, this book is much more accessible.
On the downside, the commentary does not cover the whole speech. Lines 620 to 892 (about a quarter of the whole) are completely without notes or vocabulary, which is probably not a problem for Advanced Placement students, but disappointing for everybody else.

This is the Cicero book needed for AP Latin

This book contains all of the Cicero required for the AP Latin Literature. It says in the preface that this book was designed specifically for AP students. Each section consists of about 30 lines of Latin (two or three "chapters") followed by explanation of words and difficult grammar (and some of it is extremely difficult). It is difficult to translate, but well worth it. This is the epitomy of persuasion.
