About the Author

Jerry H. Bentley was professor of history at the University of Hawai`i and editor of the Journal of World History. He wrote extensively on the cultural history of early modern Europe and on cross-cultural interactions in world history, including Humanists and Holy Writ: New Testament Scholarship in the Renaissance (1983), and Politics and Culture in Renaissance Naples (1987), and in later years, concentrated on global history and particularly on processes of cross-cultural interaction, resulting in Old World Encounters: Cross-Cultural Contacts and Exchanges in Pre-Modern Times (1993) and Shapes of World History in Twentieth-Century Scholarship (1996). He passed away in 2012.

Yoko Ono is a seminal figure in the development of Conceptual art, performance and Fluxus, as well as film and new music. Her artist's book Grapefruit, first published in 1964 in Tokyo by Wunternaum Press in an edition of 500 copies, contains more than 150 works divided into five sections: MUSIC, PAINTING, EVENT, POETRY, OBJECT. These works--conceptual instructions--are the culmination of a process that dispensed with the physical and arrived at the idea.
Since the initial publication of Grapefruit, numerous expanded editions have been produced in many different languages. Today first-edition copies are nearly impossible to find. The Museum of Modern Art has now produced a facsimile of that first edition, making it available again in its original form. This slipcased paperback is produced from the copy of the 1964 book in The Museum of Modern Art Library. It is an exacting replica of Grapefruit as Ono first envisioned it.
Born in Tokyo in 1933, Yoko Ono moved to New York in the mid-1950s and became a critical link between the American and Japanese avant-gardes. Ono's groundbreaking work greatly influenced the international development of Conceptual art, performance art and experimental film and music. In celebration of Ono's 80th birthday in 2013, the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt organized a major traveling retrospective.

Great book by a misunderstood artist

Since 1968, Yokophobia has prevented people from perceiving reality correctly. Yokophobia was brought on largely because John Lennon was "supposed" to marry a white woman, oh, and, another thing, because the Beatles broke up. Since she has been blamed for this, shattering the delusion that a rock band should last forever (look at the Rolling Stones now for goodness sake!), people have been unusually mean-spirited in their assessment of her work. I can understand why people shy away from her more avant-garde musical output, often consisting of ear-shattering screams (I am one of those sickos that just happens to love it!). But "Grapefruit," one of the most widely distributed pieces of Fluxus-connected/inspired "performance art," is simply irresistible. (Remember, Yoko had a career as an avant-garde artist before she met John Lennon--they met at one of her art exhibits in 1967.) It is serious, excruciatingly humorous and regularly induces smiles--all while simultaneously encouraging its readers to think abstractly, artistically, creatively and irreverently. "Grapefruit" is a breath of fresh sky-blue air from the woman who once asked (on the b-side of John Lennon's "Instant Karma") "Who Has Seen the Wind?"
"Grapefruit" is filled, for the most part, with short, koan-like "pieces" such as "Wall Piece for Orchestra." Yoko directs the piece as follows: "Hit a wall with your head." In "Overtone Piece," Yoko writes, "Make music only with overtones." In the painting pieces section, she instructs her reader, in "Painting for the Wind," to "Make a hole. / Leave it in the wind." In the "events" section, probably the closest here to her performance art, she evokes a giggly pun on "peace" (or maybe "pee") in "Pea Piece," writing, "Carry a bag of peas. / Leave a pea wherever you go." If you find this type of humor and "artistic direction" a waste of time, which many undoubtedly will, then avoid this like the plague. But if you, like me, find this darkly humorous, refreshingly perverse and instructive as to how to live life seriously without taking it too seriously, then "Grapefruit" should find a place on your bookshelf, or, better yet, on your nightstand.

Master Piece

I bought this book in England in 1970 when it was released with the charming cover of a grapefruit atop a female posterior.
I loved the book and kept it rather than follow Yoko's instructions to burn it afterward.
Yesterday I read it again. It is funny how one's perceptions change over thirty years for better or for worse.
My conclusion is that this book is a Master Piece.

About the Author
Catherine Dowling is one of the leading writers in the field of breathwork psychotherapy. Her book, Rebirthing and Breathwork: A Powerful Technique for Personal Transformation, is essential reading for students of breathwork therapy and has attracted thousands of readers to breathwork as their path of spiritual and psychological development.

Catherine is a former president of the International Breathwork Foundation in addition to being a founder and former chairperson of the Irish Rebirthing Psychotherapy Association and co-founder of the Federation of Irish Complementary Therapy Associations.

As the author of influential articles on the training of therapists, she was one of the developers of the International Breathwork Training Alliance, a standard setting body for breathworkers based in Wisconsin. She developed the nationally accredited Rebirther Training Program for the training of therapists in Ireland and was a member of the Irish Department of Health's national working group on the regulation of complementary and alternative therapists. She was also a consultant to the Irish Health Services Executive on the issues of suicide prevention and residential child care.

Don't hold your breath

First I must declare my bias since I know the writer personally.

That said, anyone wanting to make a fresh start and try something new, is making a wise choice. For veterans or newbies, this book guides you through the steps to realize your full potential.

The author's easy style and encouraging voice, helps ease the reader into into a unique realm of self discovery and growth.

There are masses of fascinating facts for the technically minded and helpful advice for the struggling.

And now it's on Kindle, I cannot resist.

Fantastic

As a Rebirther and Rebirther trainer my self for 35 years I found this book informative not only for the beginner but also long time Rebirther s like myself. Her explanations of the process and her client examples went into great detail and were clearly explained I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering beginning on a Rebirthing journey I thank the author Catherine Dowling for making this book available to the world wide public

Thoughtful, Thorough, Theoretical and Practical

I have used this book to teach from for two semesters in an introductory level university course with excellent results. This edition, with an expanded bibliography, is of even greater value than the hardcover. Dr. Wolff is thorough, analytical yet practical and humane in his discussion of ethnic conflicts. He enriches the study of and understanding of ethnic conflict greatly with this volume, which would be a superb addition to a reading list for graduate courses in ethnic conflict and/or conflict resolution.

His depth of knowledge and perception is evident on every page, and this is highly readable because of this. Students at all levels of knowledge respond to it very positively. I strongly recommend this book and all others by Stefan Wolff; they are worthy additions to all libraries, both personal and institutional.

Andrew Razeghi is Founder of StrategyLab, Inc., a growth strategy and innovation consulting group and is a professor at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He is also a Limited Partner in Techstars and an angel investor in many startups. Razeghi has served as Vice Chairman of the Wright Centers of Innovation at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC and has provided testimony to the Congress of the United States on driving economic recovery through innovation. This is definitely on my short-list of recommended books for entrepreneurs

I devoured this book. As an entrepreneur myself, I have a short list of books that I always recommend to anyone getting into the world of consumer products: Mission in a Bottle, Rubies in the Orchard, Brand Hijack, and now Bend the Curve. I've added this book for one reason - it's useful. This book is filled with practical advice, it takes a no nonsense approach, and it is fun to read. The wisdom of the entrepreneurs that were interviewed is expertly woven with the authors own insights. Innovation is an extremely difficult subject to write about because it is typically backward looking at the success of others that have innovated. While a backward looking approach makes for great motivation and a fun read, it is limited in its practical application because once innovation is exposed, it really isn't that innovative anymore. This is quite a paradox. This book gave me the tools to systematically introduce innovative thinking into my business and helped me to create new products in our pipeline. This isn't "pie in the sky" type of innovation, rather, it got into the nuts and bolts of actually creating new things and pushing the envelope of my thinking.

Bend The Curve is a great, accessible read. Andrew Razeghi teaches startup lessons through the eyes of multiple successful startup founders, many with links to Chicago. He invokes advice from a broad array of people -- from Steve Blank to Benjamin Franklin to the band Wilco -- drawing startup lessons from each. Bend The Curve is for anyone who has, as Razeghi puts it, "a penchant for problem solving and a bias towards action."

Realizing Excellence In Your Life

I have found Rob's works to be essential in liberating my strength training practice from the conventional stronghold that has so long held it prisoner. Now, rather than floating off between sets, checking out when the workout gets tough, or introducing struggle when I find none, I've learned to turn my practice into something much greater. This is truly the yoga of strength training and I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for meaning and purpose beyond the small, ego driven self.

About the Author
George Ehrenhaft has been writing for Barron's for over three decades. During that time he has been the author or co-author of books on the SAT, the ACT, and both the AP English Literature and AP English Language exams. Other titles relate to English grammar and essay writing, especially writing college application essays. He has also written several Barron's Book Notes titles about literature, including The Grapes of Wrath. and A Streetcar Named Desire.

Ehrenhaft spent most of his career teaching English in Westchester County, New York, at Fox Lane and Mamaroneck High Schools. He is now a resident of Moraga, California, where he has become a prolific watercolor painter.

Get a 5 on your AP test!

This book helped my daughter get a 5 on her AP exam! Without it, she wouldn't have the extra practice and strategies she could only get from a source made specifically to help on the AP Test, as apposed to relying strictly on her textbook or her teacher who has 50+ students to prepare.
