Facinating, riveting and truely an ironclad classic

While reading this book I felt a sure sense that I was touching the un-ordinary wolrd of time and space . The book gives you a chance to feel an erie sense of amazement. With plenty of overwhelming photographic evidence and well documented accounts. The reading is quite palatable and always makes great entertainment, even when you may only have five or ten minutes to read. Personally, the most uncanny thing about this book was what happened to me while reading it during a rest-break in the mountains. I paused from reading,then tuned over a stone with my foot, just at random. And it turned out to be the complete fossil of a clam shell ! Coincidence or ???

Mysteries of Time and Space

Once picked up it's impossible to put down this book. The subject matter is varied and exciting. The author manages to explain the circumstances surrounding each mystery with exceptional clarity whilst retaining the interest of the reader. Some of the stuff was a little scary but it need's to be told and known. I found the book very comtemporary and hugely relevent to todays world. Go buy it - I DARE YOU!

A Classic in every sense of the word

The re-release of Brad Steiger’s “Mysteries of Time and Space” forty-two years after its original publication affirms not only the correctness of his work, but has multiplied its value in proportion to the decline of our civilization since the mid-1970s. With the concurrent rise of America’s National Security State --- spying on millions of its own citizens, terrorizing them with tax audits, sometimes killing them if they protest too much --- his chapter entitled “Passport to Paranoia” proved to be too prescient. It is all part of “the Reality Game,” as he so aptly terms it; a consensus reality everyone is expected to unquestionably uphold at the peril of losing his or her reputation, livelihood, liberty or even life, according to the sliding scale of offense against official paradigms, which range from “conspiracy theorist” to “domestic terrorist”. Steiger’s truly great achievement here is to show just how the Reality Game is an all-encompassing tyranny of the mind, not just politically or ideologically. Good generic gateway book

This is a very, very good book -- a comprehensive overview of solar PV that would give anyone a detailed background on solar PhotoVoltaics. Whether as an introduction to for the sake of knowledge or gaining employment, this is a good starter. You'll be walked through the world of basics in many branches of science: solar radiation, battery and PV chemistry, planning a very credible solar PV site survey, PV as systems.

The electrical fundamentals component is strong -- the Electrical Integration chapter is exemplary. The treatment of National Electric Code issues is a palatable presentation of what is normally dry material -- arcane, quasi-legal tone and language or the Code. The electrical/electronic diagrams are basic but phenomenal -- and pleasingly presented, in size, color, placement, etc.

As a personal viewpoint, the electronic theory has fundamental equations, which are dumbed down enough to be a bit superfluous in presentation, just enough to set some people off, because it LOOKS like it may be math-intensive. But there are appendices in the back for background math if you're interested. And the back of the book also has further, detailed chapter summaries, and some hard data useful for calculating solar radiation, energy, shading, orientations, and other useful data for obtaining rebates and incentives. All you need is arithmetic and there are good examples for almost everything. There's one instance in the Peak Sun Hours section, where the solar energy units shown are not technically complete or correct, but it was just sloppy technical editing that allowed this, and not major.

Mechanical Integration explains mechanical, structural, and environmental issues. There's also some on other alternative energy models, like fuel cell, cold fusion, etc. They mention energy storage like super capacitors and flywheel models.

There is good CD, full of good stuff -- not of the text itself, but of lengthy videos of fairly recent installations, and one presentation. There's also one or two interactive exams and a solar calculator.

Table of Contents is good; the Index fairly decent. Photos, graphics, and sidebars are plentiful and well done.

Beautifully-done Definitions, Summary, and Review sections at the end of each chapter, 14 in all, with plenty of references through the book.

SOME but just some of the content is a little too elementary -- especially true for the finance-based sections,

I THINK the author is a University of Florida BSEE dropout who opted instead for a BS in Engineering Services. He has a Professional Engineer certification, which is useful in many branches of engineering like civil, structural, mechanical, safety, and architectural, required by many states and municipalities, and can buy these entities a biT of litigation protection or mitigation.

This book is used as a community college level intro text -- perfect choice. My compliments to the author.

You better be paying attention. This is a required text book in one of my PV Cert. courses. Not for light reading. Tons of info and references. Maybe even more than you need to know. Best book I have come across. Mechanical and mathematical background is a must. NABCEP is now going to this book as a reference for their Cert. of Knowledge test.

Great mid level photovoltaic training textbook

I use this as the textbook for the Advanced PV Design class I teach at Diablo Valley College. This textbook is targeted toward folks who need to know how to design and install on-grid and off-grid PV systems. It's probably a bit to much for someone with a casual interest in PV or a homeowner looking to get more information before they hire someone to install a system.

All the major points involved in design and installation are covered well. Unlike some texts I have seen space is not wasted by including page after page of tables with data that is readily available from other sources for free. There is also a section in the appendix with a math review for folks who don't remember their high school trig all that well.

The textbook may seem expensive but as professional books go it is quite reasonable. Make sure you are buying the latest version because as with most textbooks it is revised periodically.

About the Author
Yoshiki Teramoto was born in Kyoko, Japan in 1950. He graduated Osaka University and received his PhD on physics at Osaka City University in 1978. After working at Brookhaven National Laboratory, City University of New York, National Laboratory for High-Energy Physics in Japan, he is currently an associate professor for experimental particle physics at Osaka City University.

2.5 stars. Book needs to be edited. Explanations often inadequate

As a Ph.D. physicist who has not specialized in particle physics, I had high hopes for this book. I have read numbers of semi-popular books on the subject in the hope of getting some painless enlightenment. But was disappointed by this book. The physics is sometimes wrong, obtuse, or just poorly explained. I was alerted to this early on by his incorrect comments on E = mc^2: energy and mass are the "same" (no, they are not, or we wouldn't designate them by different words) and lifting an object in Earth's gravity field increases the object's mass (no, it increases the mass of the Earth-object system, while reducing the mass of the person who did the lifting.)

A small but annoying feature is the occasionally non-idiomatic English. For example, the author spells "vice versa" as "vise verse," and uses terms such as "commutable" instead of "commutative", and "Pauli's Exclusive Principle" instead of "Pauli's Exclusion Principle." These lapses in English are minor in themselves, but undermine confidence in the author's scholarship. This book was self-published by Dr. Teramoto, and he obviously did not have have it vetted for English and for physics by any competent person. Not a wise choice.

A few chapters are better than others, and may merit 3 or even 3.5 stars. For example, I liked his chapter 6 on classification of particles. But as a rule, the analogies he offers are either "good but not original," or "original but not good." For an example of the latter, he proposes to explain/motivate the famous uncertainty relation of Heisenberg by the oscillation of particles. A dubious idea. For the most part, I think you won't learn anything new from this book, because if you don't already understand a thing, the author's explanations will make very little sense.

Dr. Teramoto, your book shows promise. You should have enough confidence in your creation to have it reviewed and corrected by other particle physicists, and get the English polished by a native speaker.

Really helped me understand some concepts

I have a 2 year associates degree in physics, but this book is more appropriate for someone who has a bachelor's degree in physics. I have an interest in particle physics and have read about half a dozen beginner level books like this one.

What I love about the book is that he was able to explain some concepts very well. I felt like I was able to visualize many processes better than from any of the other books I read. Before, I never really understood spin or how asymptotic freedom worked. I have a much better understanding about SU(2) and SU(3) symmetries, and many other concepts.

What I didn't like about the book, is that I was only able to understand about half of it. This is most likely due to my lack of math abilities with imaginary numbers and their transformations. I think if I were better at math concepts, and put more effort in, I could have learned some basic truths about this subject. He seems to explain it very well, but it is a very difficult subject. Even though it's difficult, I still find it very rewarding and fascinating

If you're a beginner on this subject, I would recommend the free website The Particle Adventure. I also recommend going to the Wikipedia article about particle physics, and printing the purple, green, red and yellow chart with all the particles. I keep this chart handy when reading these beginner books. I feel like I finally have a basic understanding of the field.

Even though I only understood about half the book, the parts I did understand are quite remarkable.

So far it's a three. Grammar needs editing. The constant 'c' is wrong. If that's incorrect, the all the math is suspect.

About the Author
Robert W. Strayer (PhD, University of Wisconsin) taught African, Soviet, and world history for many years at SUNY College at Brockport, where he received Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching and for Excellence in Scholarship. In 1998 he was visiting professor of world and Soviet history at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. Since 2002, he has taught world history at the University of California, Santa Cruz; California State University, Monterey Bay; and Cabrillo College. His scholarship includes work in African history (Kenya: Focus on Nationalism, 1975; The Making of Mission Communities in East Africa, 1978); Soviet history (Why Did the Soviet Union Collapse?,1998;  The Communist Experiment, 2007) and World History (The Making of the Modern World, 1988, 1995; Ways of the World, 2009, 2011). He is a long-time member of the World History Association and served on its Executive Committee.

Valuable Text In New Edition

This is a very serviceable survey for the early eras of world history. Unlike multi-authored texts---e.g. with 4 authors, 6 editions and scant literary merit---Robert Strayer presents a unified perspective in engaging, readable style. The illustrations, maps and supporting material are excellent. While the philosophy is rather liberal, Strayer is well-balanced in presenting a range of views. He is more interested in discerning key developments and patterns of change rather than piling on details (thus "brief history"), but there's enough data to illustrate the major issues. Unlike many textbooks, women's history, especially the women's movement, receive proper attention. It's also among the most affordable world history surveys. One drawback is the lack of extensive primary source excerpts, but teachers can easily remedy this deficiency with other assignments. A good supplement is E Gilbert & J Reynolds, "Trading Tastes," also reasonably priced compared to most source collections. Strayer's works have quickly become my favorites for world history courses.

Scandal in Gibbsville!

O'Hara wrote mostly of the daily peccadillos and scandals that transpired in the early 20th century small town of fictional Gibbsville, Pennsylvania, located in the anthracite region of the Keystone State. Gibbsville rarely escapes mention in any of his works.

His best novel of all (my opinion) is 'Appointment in Sammarra' where we are treated, right off, to a young mover and shaker who spontaneously decides to chuck his iced cocktail into his old mossbacked boss's face, giving the old man a black eye. That's the sort of story that it is and I loved every word.

In 'Butterfield 8', an adventurous young and beautiful gal has an affair with an unrepentent executive. He unwisely ticks her off by leaving her some cash to get home on after one particular night of wild carousing and, as the guy's wife is away from the apartment, she lifts his wife's mink coat from the closet, just to cause this scoundrel a panic. It goes downhill from there. The 'Butterfield 8' thing is a reference to a phone number, (for those of us who are aged enough to remember that phone numbers used to begin with 'names' so that we could remember them better).

'Hope of Heaven' is a tale of Hollywood (and obliquely of Gibbsville) and a playwright is the protagonist. And since it's Hollywood, of course there follows plenty of underhandedness, scandal and O'Hara's semi-graphic trademark conveyance.

O'Hara loves to kill off his characters, and not necessarily the ones that you expect to die. Every time he abruptly pulls it off, I find myself rolling in the floor, howling with laughter, mostly at myself for not seeing it coming.

This triad of novelettes is some of John O'Hara's finest work. If you enjoyed Grace Metallious's 'Peyton Place' you'll love O'Hara's work which is additionally injected with shrewdly-scribed humor. This is fine 20th Century American literature, better than 99-percent of contemporary works -- it is timeless because O'Hara's characters have existed in every society throughout every era of time.

O'Hara's big three - wonderful

I hadn't read "Heaven" but saw the movie "Butterfield 8" years ago. Am greatly enjoying the book "Appointment in Samarra." I didn't appreciate his works earlier. The detailed slice of life from the time just after the depression began in 1929 is fascinating. He wrote as life is lived. He didn't color coat everything. I heartily recommend the book.

I was very satisfied with the delivery time. The book was advertised as used, and it was published in 1934, but other than being yellowed it was in good condition and did not affect the readability. After reading Steinbeck I appreciated O'Hara. JLO

An outstanding overview of Indian Psychology

Dr. Cornelissen has spent many years studying Indian psychology, and has worked hard to inspire university-based psychologists in India to take seriously the idea that the Indian philosophic and spiritual tradition has much to offer contemporary scientific psychology. Foundations of Indian Psychology consists of essays by numerous highly qualified academicians describing various ways in which Indian psychology can make practical contributions to our contemporary understanding of the human mind.

As if this weren't enough, it is clear from a careful reading of the various essays that many of the greatest mysteries yet facing modern science - the greatest being the mystery of consciousness - might find novel solutions from Indian psychology. A good place to start in looking for those solutions would be this excellent book.
