I read this manuscript with great scrutiny for I have been a pioneer, promoter and defender of prophets and prophetic ministry for 55 years. I can honestly say that Jennifer covers some very delicate subjects with sound wisdom and integrity.

The integrity of prophets is as important as the accuracy of their prophecies. People need to know that there are true and false prophets and what makes them true or false. There are also those who are called to be prophets but who are immature, lack sound biblical knowledge, have more zeal than wisdom, or who are presumptuous.

Thank God there are now numerous mature prophets with godly character and pure motives who are being true representatives of Jesus Christ, the Prophet of all holy prophets and prophetic ministries. Jennifer LeClaire's book, in my estimation, is one of the best books on prophecy available. Very informatively, she writes as one who believes, understands and participates in prophecy.

The reader catches her intense desire to see the gift of God function powerfully in prophets of integrity. She describes about a dozen prophetic types, using illustrations, history and abundant Scriptures in a most entertaining way.

It is so brilliant to be challenged! Every ministry needs to be aware of the kingdom standard that Jesus provokes by His presence.

I loved this book! Jennifer does a bold, insightful job of discerning the precious from the worthless (Jeremiah 15:19) yet also pursues us with the love of God. Political correctness is the spirit of this age and it requires people with boldness, good character and the heart of God to stand and speak the truth with power, authority, mercy and grace.

It seems that we are entering another season where prophets will be vilified, hounded and get killed again. Jennifer s book enables us to understand how important it is for us to be clean, pure and righteous so that we might die for the best of reasons ... that we are a thorn in the flesh of the church and a powerful enemy against the occult.

I adored all the chapter headings; so imaginative. Now all we need is for apostles, pastors, teachers and evangelists to follow Jennifer's lead and write a book based on those titles, for their own ministry disciplines. The Heart of the Matter

It was by "accident" that I stumbled across this book, and "coincidence" that I had been conversing with God about the very things addressed within it (as they pertain to me and my weaknesses, stumbling blocks and fears; my situation;...as well as my own observations and concerns regarding the prophetic movement.) I have been frustrated, suddenly finding myself in a place with no pastoral covering and in the midst of a body that...well, let's just say I've been feeling mighty misunderstood, disoriented and, OK, fearful.(Poor me.) God is so faithful! Through Jennifer LeClaire's careful application of Scripture He has used this book to help answer my questions, confirm what I know, and encourage me in the right direction. I welcome everything written in The Heart of the Prophetic. While recognizing that we live in a time of grace, my greatest fear still is that I would claim to speak for God when in fact I'm speaking to somehow satisfy myself. This book addresses that issue and others from every conceivable angle. Concerns boldly confronted are: political correctness, presumptions (personal opinions,) self-will, control, greed, merchandising, deceit, judgmentalism, and stubborn rebellion. The issues discussed in each of the chapters are all closely related, of course, because at the heart of the matter is the hazard of the intercessor/prophet serving one of those other "gods" - Self, or Satan.

Jennifer's writing style is clear, direct, and conversational. She manages to meet the monster head-on without turning off the reader. (Well, I wasn't turned off, but then I was hungry to hear what was being said.) I encourage everyone called as an intercessor/prophetic-intercessor/prophetic/prophet to read this book. If we don't find ourselves humbly inviting God to search our hearts as we move through the various chapters, the only appropriate response would be to cry, "Woe! Have mercy, Lord!"

Can someone say, The Heart of the Prophetic Ministry.

Jennifer is a mighty resource and every revelatory insight she has comes directly from the spirit of God, not only do I love this book, I can't wait to get my hands on the other books she has, she has been a huge reason I can understand the trials and things I face in life, her wisdom brings life and clarity to many questions I have, not only do I recommend her books, I consider her a spiritual mentor and she doesn't even have to have an intimate relationship with me. In, The Heart of the prophetic she exposes the Jezebel spirit, I have seen the prophetic ministry get hi-jacked in many areas and her book helps me recognize the spirit, I know exactly how to position myself for intercession because of the insight she offers. The Heart of the Prophetic She gets a 10 stars review from me!!!

Need a Heart Check-up?

It was no accident that I came accross Jennifer LeClaire's "The Heart of the Prophetic" I am not sure how I found Jennifer's website but I was very interested in what she had to say iin her articles on there. Jennifer has written a number of books and they all are books that I can see myself ordering. This book was more than a resource on the pitfalls that arise in the prophetic ministry. As I read each chapter it was though the Holy Spirit was nudging me to repent at every corner.

When you read this book,you may be tempted to think, "This Chapter is not about me" and read without taking notice of all the chapters in the book. You may be tempted to think of other prophets that you know and apply the pitfalls mentioned in this book to them, whilst considering yourself pure. But this is not why Jennifer wrote this book. She does a broad sweep of the pitfalls that confront a modern prophet and you should if you are human recognise some of them in your life as a prophet or prophet in training. I have been for instance a self willed prophet, a Jezebel controlled prophet, a merchandising prophet as well as others.

The book is a breath of fresh air and it is really liberating to read and seek the Lord to clean you from the inside out as you cover each of the extensive chapters. I thank the Lord for Jennifer and he dedication to Truth in the prophetic and in all her endevours. I encourage you to check out her author page and the other books that she has written.

Improved Reference Section

The paper quality of this 2011 centenary 12th edition is better than the 2008 predecessor. It is whiter and the print reads well, so it is comfortable to the eye. The paper is also tougher.

The layout of the 10th edition is superior and better spaced, and one can hope future editions can revert to more generous spacing and previous typeface. All three editions mentioned above weigh exactly the same, have similar number of pages but the 2011 edition is about 1 cm thinner, 5.5 cm. This makes it so much easier to grasp, hold and handle. Aesthetically sleeker, it is also harder to drop during usage.

Nearly the entire reference section has changed to include useful information, and has welcome additions such as
*Lists of Prime Ministers and Presidents of the major countries of the world;
*UK Kings and Queens and years of their reign; States of the USA with their capitals;
*Weights measures and notations;
*The Greek alphabet;
*The solar system and the major moons;
*The chemical elements, although a classical Periodic Table chart would have been useful.

The countries of the world have been put back, along with the attendant capitals, areas, current populations and currency units. The one page list of collective nouns (e.g. "a drunkship of cobblers", a "golzing of taverners", "a covey of ptarmigan",) has been retained.

This thin reference section of only 14 pages is located between the letters J and K. The centre section of the 2008 edition contained a few pages of very useful "Foreign Words and Phrases". I would like to see all commonly used Foreign Words and Phrases, incorporated into the main body of the dictionary. Single foreign words, like zeitgeist, schadenfreude (now in lower case), cognoscenti, have largely been incorporated into the body of the 2011 edition, so have phrases like "sui generis" and "raison d'etre". But the absence of commonly encountered phrases such as "ex gratia" and "a capella" is really regrettable.

If you need a comprehensive dictionary with 75,000 root words instead of the usual 25,000, you would expect a large number of foreign phrases to pop up regularly in your reading material. Syndicated newspaper columnists are prone to spice up their articles with obscure foreign phrases, which they can legitimately use, if these pompous foreign phrases are consonant with the theme of their articles. I would like to have a dictionary deal with such "foreign phrase" contingencies.

The 2008 edition had an interesting centre middle section, which included:
*English Uncovered: telling us how Oxford tracks the English language, with interesting information like the 100 most commonly used words ("the" tops the list), words with the most meanings ("set" has 156), and how English is changing. One reading of this essay is enough, and should not be repeated with every edition.
*Fascinating words, some of which like "rhinoplasty" have been incorporated into the dictionary as they have ceased to be fascinating.
*Guide to Good English: does not belong to a dictionary: nobody buys a dictionary to learn Grammar.
These sections have rightfully been removed.

The 2011 edition has fewer word usage bubbles, where a tinted bubble explains how words are used. It draws the attention of the user to the differences between "discreet" and "discrete", for instances. For a dictionary, which has to catch up with increasing number of words in actual use, such amplifications on English usage wastes valuable space. This dictionary is clearly not for learners of English. There is the Advanced Learner's English Dictionary by Oxford for this purpose. These "word usage" bubbles look so much like cut and paste jobs from "Fowler's Modern English Usage", a copy of which can be purchased separately. Previous editions did not have these superfluous bubbles, and this experiment in the recent editions must now be considered a failure.

The sheer large number of entries in this "Concise" dictionary suggests that this dictionary is for those way, way, way, way, way past the beginner's learning stage of English. With this dictionary, it is hard to hit a dead end searching for a word, even at college level and when reading some exotic "intellectual" essays.

The 2011 edition has a one-off 9-page essay on the evolution of the Concise Oxford over 100 years. These 9 celebratory pages will not be relevant in future editions. There are interesting bubbles throughout the dictionary on how the word was defined in the first 1911 edition versus its current 2011 usage. These bubbles would only be relevant in a centenary edition.

The space saved would be applied to an ever-expanding vocabulary, and also other important reference material. Your table-top dictionary should have:
A. All the words you are likely to encounter in the course of your reading; AND
B. Important reference material and tables which I need to refer to occasionally, such as:
a. table of military ranks in major armed forces, and service arms
b. signs of the Zodiac
c. Chinese Zodiac
d. Wedding Anniversaries and corresponding materials
e. Birthstones
f. Counties of the UK
g. Books of the Bible
h. Braille,
i. Morse Code (which I may need in an emergency)
j. NATO alphabetical pronouncing code
k. Roman numerals
l. A political map of the world (this is getting important as events are happening in places most people have never heard of).
m. Fibonacci numbers, fractions and corresponding decimals, for those who dabble in the stock market.
All the above can easily be accommodated by the 9 pages saved in future non-centenary editions. Incidentally, a table of symbols is hidden on page xxix, in the rather prolix introduction to the dictionary.

I welcome the return of the conversion tables. Next time, do not convert 1 square metre or 1 acre to archaic square yards. For real estate use today, the conversion is to square feet. Valuation is done in price per square foot, although your mortgagee bank manager thinks in square metres. A conversion of ounces into grammes is getting very important in a world where gold trading is getting prominent. A conversion of feet and inches into metric is important. When my architect tells me that the kitchen stove is 600 mm height, or that somebody is 1.82 metres tall, I would like to know what it is in old fashioned feet and inches. My BMI is calculated in metric height and weight, not stones, lbs and feet and inches. Oxford needs to thoroughly update its conversion tables to bring it in line with modern usage.

The dictionary is made in the UK. The binding is slightly better than previous editions, but the hinges of the hard covers are still atrocious. Oxford has probably sized up the users of this dictionary as people who handle books gently. If a new version comes out every few years, cost is a more important consideration than the toughness of the volume.

The physical book is easily the shoddiest dictionary I have ever bought. Politically correct buyers can take some comfort that the manufacture of the book was not outsourced. But for the content, this dictionary is a bargain for its price and really has no peer in its class.

I own the 20 volume OED, Second Edition (Print), and I love it, but the CONCISE is accessible and always helpful. I keep the OED in my study and the CONCISE by my reading chair. I love it because of the rich history of the OED (The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of The Oxford English Dictionary -- a wonderfully delicious book also).

Really excellent book

I read this little book the first time almost 30 years ago upon the recommendation of a very well known chess book seller. While I didn't totally understand it all, I faithfully read it trying to absorb all I could.

I noticed it on my shelf recently and pondered whether it justified a re-read nearly 700 rating points later. After wrestling with the question ( I mistakingly believed it had nothing further to offer) for some time- I decided to give it my attention for a couple of weeks. I attempt to re-read every one of my many chess books periodically to see what I can soak up at each new level of understanding.

I have not been disappointed. While it is old, and in descriptive ( get over it now! It takes all of about ten minutes to figure out descriptive and there are still a large number of worthwhile books on the market written in DN) it contains ideas, principles, and general guidelines that guide even the openings of today.

Knosko-borovsky's writing is pretty much timeless in my opinion.

You are not going to find the dozen different variations currently considered playable in the Sicilian dragon Yugoslav attack on the 15th move here, but you are going to find chess truth that will guide you for many years to come no Matter what you play.

If you are ready to actually understand something rather than just memorize lists of moves (some of which will be outdated by the time you read this review) get this book!

As good as any

This book was originally written in 1935. It is in descriptive notation (P-K4), 141 pages plus 7 pages of solutions to the 36 questions scattered through it.

As its title suggests, it is about the general principles behind the different openings. The explanations are clear and easy to follow, and as good as any I've seen. It keeps things simple and doesn't list dozens of complex variations that would overwhelm a beginner. The fact that it is only $8 is icing on the cake. Recommended!

I find only minor shortcoming for this sort of book. Algebraic notation would be better these days, but we have only the laziness of the publisher to blame for that. Descriptive notation should not deter a potential reader - it is no harder to learn than learning how a knight moves! The modern and hypermodern lines do not get coverage proportional to their current popularity. When the book was written, Alekhine's defence was new on the scene, and it got 3 pages. The Sicilian got 4 pages.

Chess openings is a very difficult subject for beginners. When does the opening end and the middlegame start? How do I know that at the end of a given variation there are "about equal chances" or that "white has a slight advantage"? For general principles, this book is exactly what a beginner needs. For specific variations and their detailed analysis, things that only a serious chess player would worry about, one needs books that specialize in one opening or only one line (e.g. Sicilian Najdorf). To stay current, one needs the Chess Informant. The trouble with such books is that they get outdated very quickly. These days a better option is a computerized database, possibly with a subscription service to stay current. Computers have changed the way an advanced player studies openings. But the beginner still needs a book like this one. For a more modern introduction, with algebriac notation, I recommend Seirawan's book "Winning Chess Openings", ISBN 1857443497. It is thicker at 250 pages, but is easy to read.
No single book will convert you from a beginner to a master - only hard work can do that. However, each book you read will put a little more wind in your sail.

Amazing book for all chess players!

This book is one of the best books that have been published on chess openings. The main principle that is taught throughout the book is the concepts of each opening, like in the classic sicilian, control of the center is a strong concept which can change the whole game upside down if you don't have it. Weaknesses are explained for each opening and the author tells you how to exploit these weaknesses like never seen before! this book is for people who follow the strong foundations of chess, it's theory. The book is based off of old notation which can be difficult for lazy learners, but it is self explanatory if you try. This book may be based off some of the older theories that are the foundations of the present theories.

Most comprehensive structural engineering book on the market

The Handbook of Structural Engineering is a comprehensive reference source on the fundamentals of, and special topics in, structural engineering. The book is intended for practicing engineers, and the introduction notes that the ideal reader will be an "M.S.-level engineer." Consequently, treatment of subjects is highly technical and emphasizes mathematical explanations to an extent that it might be of limited use to novices.
The first section provides a detailed overview of the fundamentals of structural engineering. Following this introductory section are eight chapters covering special types of structures, and thirteen chapters on special topics in structural engineering. All chapters contain a brief glossary of key concepts discussed within the chapter, an extensive bibliography, suggested readings, and a list of relevant codes and standards where applicable.

Very Comprehensive, and Especially Valuable for Semi-Rigid Jointed Structures

This single volume includes chapters on topics as diverse as timber engineering, tunnel construction, fire engineering, bridges of all types, glass structures, fiber-reinforced polymer composites, and much more.

One exceptionally-helpful chapter in this book, in my opinion, is Chapter 23, on semirigid frame structures. Author Xu explains the concept of semirigid joints, summarizes the state-of-the-art knowledge in the field, and provides worked examples of problems involving semirigid-fixed beams and braced frames. The worked examples are especially helpful in that they each show the solution in a very step-by-step manner.
