Awesome book for helping prayer life

This book has completely changed the way that I view my relationship with God, in a good way. I now realize why I wasn't growing and that's because I wasn't praying and reading the Bible like I should have. Reading the book is an eye-opening experience and I wish it never ended. It provided practical steps and solutions and was completely Biblical. I am recommending it to EVERYONE I know and am hoping to be able to buy a few copies to pass out to friends soon. Sontag's ( The Volcano Lover ) first stage play focuses on Alice James, the invalid sister of Henry and William and, since Jean Strouse's acclaimed 1980 biography and the publication of her diary, a feminist icon. It is in the latter role that Sontag casts the bed-ridden Alice, and playing off her name, she suggests, too, another, more famous Alice of fiction--to the extent that the center of the play's action is a tea party. The tea party becomes a gathering of independent women of imagination: Emily Dickinson, Margaret Fuller, Myrtha from the ballet Giselle and, as the somnolent dormouse, Kundry from Wagner's Parsifal. Alice's doting brother Henry makes a couple of appearances as well. Unfortunately, although Sontag acknowledges that her work is "a free fantasy based on a real person," none of the characters ever breathes with life; each lies flat on the page as a mouthpiece for Sontag's ideas about the imagination's dual role as liberator and jailer for a 19th-century woman of intelligence and about "women's anguish and women's consciousness of self." Moreover, her dialogue is arch and literary. Regrettably, Sontag can add her name to a list of talented novelist-critics whose stage work disappoints.

Sontag ( The Volcano Lover , LJ 6/15/92) describes her play as a "free dramatic fantasy based on a real person," Alice James, the sister of William and Henry James. A brilliant woman who suffered from depression from the age of 19, James died from breast cancer at age 44. The center of the play is "a mad tea party," a la Alice in Wonderland , to which Sontag has convened real and fictional 19th-century women to counsel the protagonist. Emily Dickinson; Margaret Fuller; Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis (from the ballet Giselle ); and Kundry (from the opera Parsifal ) all make appearances. The dialog is terse and the action tense in this trenchant tale of imagination and feminine anger and grief. Recently excerpted in the New Yorker (5/31/93), this play had its premiere (in translation) in Bonn during September 1991. Recommended for all drama and literature collections.

Alice in bed with many tiny death chits

Just reading Alice In Bed a play gave me an appreciation of writers who know how people communicate effectively. Early in the play, Alice is given an injection when she is thrashing. The kind of control medicine can have now makes me think some people are waiting for a doctor to mess with their brains. For the death of Robin Williams, I can imagine the late great comic thinking:

If this is what medicine can do, we should all go hang.

Alice James was a smart girl whose brother William James had medical training and could recognize sick souls. As a girl, Alice was expected to provide a lot of happy horse chits for the lives of others. Near the end of the play in sickness and in wealth, Alice is reminded that she can call for servants if she needs help. If Alice had the urge to be smarter than anyone else, only a jolly moment of spoof could make her truly happy as an artist.

Catherine Parks writes from home in Nashville, Tennessee, where she lives with her husband, Erik, and their two young children. She has sung some terribly cheesy songs in weddings over the years, and gave one of the worst rehearsal dinner speeches in history to her college roommate. She blogs at CathParks.com.

Linda Strode is a pastor's wife and has been involved in multiple aspects of wedding planning over the years. She survived the bridesmaid fashion horrors of the 70’s and 80’s and has quite a few photo souvenirs to prove it. Linda and her husband, Tom, live in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Make Your Wedding All It Can Be

I guess we’ve all been to good weddings and not-so-good weddings. We’ve been to gloriously God-honoring weddings and embarrassingly God-dishonoring weddings. The best weddings, at least in my assessment, are the ones where the couple is willing to step out of the spotlight to ensure that attention is focused squarely on God. The best weddings are the ones where the couple makes much of God, where he is at the very center of it all.

Weddings are big business today. As comedian Jim Gaffigan says, “Weddings are an important event where we spend a lot of money so the bride can pretend to be a princess and marry her prince and live happily ever after.” He isn’t far from the truth. The bride is taught that this is her day, her day to shine, the day to fulfill her dreams and fantasies. And in too many cases, even among Christians, Christ is shoved to the margins.

Into the fray step Catherine Strode Parks and Linda Strode with their new book A Christ-Centered Wedding. They write, “Marriage is one of God’s good gifts. It is a blessing to all of creation, and it’s a beautiful picture of Christ’s relationship with the church. Before you can experience the joy of this gift, though, you need to get through the wedding, and the wedding planning. This can be either an uplifting, encouraging experience or a frustrating exercise in trying to please everyone and failing. Many times it’s a combination of the two.” They want to make sure that the wedding and the preparation are uplifting rather than agonizing and that the ceremony is Christ-focused rather than self-focused. And so they wrote a book about rejoicing in the gospel on your big day.

And it’s a good book. A Christ-Centered Wedding is a guide to Christians who want their wedding to point to Christ and to be a reflection of the great gospel message. They cover both the theology of marriage and the practical side of the ceremony, making this a book that is helpful in both theory and application. They begin with a biblical explanation of what marriage is, why it exists, and how it is meant to honor and glorify God. They show how, from the very beginning, God intended marriage to be a reflection of the relationship between Christ and the church.

With that in place, they move to the practical side of weddings, and cover premarital counseling, wedding locations, planning, time lines, music, finances, vows, and pretty much everything else you could think of. They draw from many other people, giving a variety of interesting and helpful ideas. What sets this book apart from the million-and-one other books on weddings is the constant focus on Christ. Every decision matters, from music to flowers, from dresses to sermon texts, from vows to honeymoons. Every decision matters because every decision can be made in a way that honors Christ and focuses on him, or a way that dishonors Christ and steals his glory.

A Christ-Centered Wedding is an excellent and much-needed resource. It is ideal book to give to an engaged couple as they begin to move toward their big day. Every pastor will want to read it and to keep some copies on hand as assigned reading. Loved this book!!!!!

All I can say is WHY DIDN'T I HAVE THIS BOOK WHEN I GOT MARRIED 17 YEARS AGO? Our wedding portrayed Christ but when we renew our wedding vows in 2017 this book will be on the table as our motivation and for our guest to look at. I will also be purchasing copies for my 6 children so when the time comes they will understand how God wants there wedding to be, not man.

I so love the part of affording a wedding, I have seen some weddings that have cost thousands of dollars and all for what one day to show off in front of guests, but now you have debt and you just became one. You can do anything you put your mind to on a budget, you can have the best wedding of all, and guests wont believe how much you spent.

God is the for front of our marriage has been for 17 years and 6 years later, with out him in the midst then none of this would have worked. i so love reading books like this because I get so much encouragement from this, and then I think about all the young people out there that are reading this book before they are engaged or even married, that's God for you.

Rejoicing in the Gospel on Your Big Day~I so love this saying because if you have Christ in the center of your lives cant nothing go wrong.

This was an easy to read book packed full of suggestions on how to have a God-honoring wedding. I loved the ideas on how to show love to your bridal party! The authors did a great job in sharing why it is important to center your wedding on the gospel of Christ.

A MUST read for Entrepreneurs

This book is a very quick and easy read that explains how to use the power of facebook to grow your small business. It's great for the independent Entrepreneur, the network marketer, the author and more. What you say, and more importantly what you don't say, on facebook can make a real difference and C.K. Mayse does a great job at explaining how to set up your profile in a professional way that creates curiosity. How to market yourself without looking like you are marketing yourself. And most importantly how to get your status updates seen by the most amount of people. No spoiler alerts here! Read the book for yourself and watch your business and your connections grow. I've seen my business grow from using the tips and techniques that are described in the book.

This is an excellent reference for anyone in sales, marketing, and networking (and a great read, overall) to utilize the Facebook/social media market.

One of my favorite tips Mayse suggests is not to post ads that give the impression you are "desperate or needy." So often we feel that if we have a product or service we truly believe in, we must get the word out in such fashion that it screams "PLEASE, PLEASE!" instead of simply encouraging a dialog or sharing a common interest. The subtle approach is one that appeals to most, garners the most interest, and gets results. Mayse does a very good job explaining how to do just that.

Malcolm Gladwell has been a staff writer with the New Yorker magazine since 1996. He is the author of The Tipping Point, Blink, and Outliers, all of which were number one New York Times bestsellers. Malcolm Gladwell's "What the Dog Saw and Other Adventures" is a compilation of the author's favorite work from The New Yorker, where he has been a staff writer since 1996. This book is divided into three parts 1. Obsessives, Pioneers, and Other Varieties of Minor Genius 2. Theories, Predictions, and Diagnoses 3. Personality, Character, and Intelligence. In the first part, Gladwell includes portraits of a pitchman for kitchen gadgets who is so persuasive that he could sell clothing to a nudist. In addition, he discusses three female advertising pioneers, a canny investment strategist, and a "dog whisperer" who is able to tame even the most intransigent canine. What these people have in common is an understanding of how human beings (and four-legged creatures) think and feel, supreme self-confidence, and the ability to promote themselves and their ideas. The second part deals with the art of thinking and seeing clearly. Gladwell describes the series of events that led to the Challenger explosion and the collapse of Enron. Could these catastrophic events have been foreseen and prevented? In part three, the author discusses various aspects of genius and talent, and whether it is possible to profile criminal behavior or predict how a prospective employee will fare on the job.

"What the Dog Saw" has some intriguing passages that will impel readers to say, "I never thought of this subject in quite that way before." The provocative Gladwell enjoys toying with conventional wisdom and challenging our preconceived notions. For instance, in one article, he defends certain forms of plagiarism, a transgression that many would consider indefensible. In another, he states that tragedies such as the Challenger disaster are unavoidable, since for a variety of reasons, "we don't really want the safest of all possible worlds." This water-cooler book will have people arguing vehemently that Malcolm Gladwell is either out of his mind or, conversely, that he is a courageously honest writer who dares to tell it like it is.

Unfortunately, there are several dreary chapters, including one that analyzes why one particular brand of ketchup is so popular and another that explores the poor judgment of John Rock, the inventor of the birth control pill. In addition, Gladwell occasionally indulges in hair-splitting: Do most of us really care about the fine distinctions between panicking and choking? On the other hand, there is a fascinating section that explains why mammograms, as a diagnostic tool, are inexact and hard to interpret. In addition, Gladwell makes a good case for the notion that intelligence failures, such as the ones that preceded 9/11, are easy to condemn in hindsight but may be more understandable when viewed in context. Malcolm Gladwell's strength has always been his ability to tell an original and entertaining story and connect it to our everyday experiences. He does just that in his best pieces, but there are others that probably should not have made the cut.
