Ride the Storm: A Cassie Palmer Novel

I really didn't like this book Ride the Storm: A Cassie Palmer Novel as much as the others - it was too frenetic. It was surely a stop gap storey that ran and ran and ran head long. She didn't even spend any time with her " Husband" but with a bare mention. She spends more time with her body guards and playing catch up but with this book I didn't get the impression she got ahead at all. Not very satisfying compared to her usual books and it leaves you hanging... There's Mircea with "The Brunette" from the painting made of real jewels under the sheets and she tells her to make like a tree and you know the rest. Cassie just uses her power and moves her into some muddy field?????? Going to have a talk?????OK????? All blase.
With the whole back and forth with Pritkin numerous times I can't even remember if she accomplished what she set for.

Jensen Ackles Handbook

I have been a big Supernatural fan for a while now and got my granddaughter hooked on the series. I wanted to give this to her as a gift and was very disappointed that the pages were totally unreadable. It looked like pages were printed on top of each other. I would love to give this to my granddaughter, as she loves Jensen Ackles.

A collection of articles from Wikipedia and short on photos

This book is simply a collection of articles from Wikipedia. The facts presented in the book (as in the articles) have not been verified to be true. The book has almost no photos (and let's face it, that's one of the big reasons to buy a book like this!). The ones it does have are small, too dark to see, and mostly not of Jensen.

Save your $20, go to Wikipedia, print out the articles. Go to Google, search for images, print out the ones you like. Go to Kinkos, and have it bound for yourself, or whomever you wanted to give the gift too. (The photos, unlike the Wikipedia articles) have copyrights, so make sure they are for private use only.)

There's a sucker born every minute - are you next?

"Once in a generation a book so righteously bad, so staggeringly deceiving and so unbearably fake comes along that it challenges the way we view ourselves and the world we call home - how can this happen in this day and age? How can this happen on amazon of all places and how can we possibly fall for this trap? It is a message that rattles through our pocketbook and echoes in the deep chambers of our disbelief, opening our eyes wide to the, all at once, fragile and enormous question that lives like an unplanted seed in all of us: why would we ever pay for free online content?

To try and talk about this book would be an exercise in futility or a challenge about how fast Wikipedia entries can change or about how anyone can write a book and sell it without even knowing how to write. It is possible and potentially quite easy. Let us not cheapen the universe's other rare literary gifts to us mortals with trash like this and honest analysis of how some amongst us play the system to deceive others. Let's us rank what is rank able. Let us go ahead and assign one star to something that so succeeds in deserving our preconceptions of when a book really deserves it. This book simply is not a book. Even though you've never heard of her, Emily Smith has in only a few months become one of the most prolific contemporary writers of our time. No matter what the subject, if it is related to any living movie star, she will have a book about them - guaranteed. For a second there, her encyclopedic celebrity knowledge seems impressive, until you realize it is all copied from Wikipedia - not that this little detail is ever really mentioned in her books. Hundreds of different titles, all sold directly by amazon.

The introduction to many of her books helpfully explains that their content was generated by volunteers (not clarifying that it's those who contribute to Wikipedia). "Nothing found here has necessarily been reviewed by people with the expertise required to provide you with complete, accurate, or reliable information.. all used third-party trademarks belong to their respective owners. Contains selected content from the highest rated entries, typeset, printed and shipped, combining the advantages of up-to-date and in-depth knowledge with the convenience of printed books.."

It's nothing new. Internet security expert and author Ben Rothke was among the first to figure out what was going on with this new crop of "content farmers" who have learned how to abuse the system and resell free online content through legitimate retail outlets. In his article "There's a Sucker Born Every Minute - and Charlatan's to Make Sure They Pay for It" (October 26, 2011), he found an author of nearly 400 books, Kevin Roebuck, who copied off Wikipedia, bound the contents into book form and sold to unsuspecting customers on amazon and on Barnes & Noble. His publisher? Tebbo, otherwise known as Emereo Publishing, who - surprise - publishes Ms. Emily Smiths vast body of work.

Ms. Emily Smith, who in a very short time has amassed an astronomical total of 1,608 books under her belt (that's not a typo), for sale directly on amazon at a hefty price. Ms. Smith's books are published on an "on demand" basis (to keep up with the sucker birthrate one assumes) so you might need to wait a day or two extra for processing time. Be patient though - you won't find these books on the publisher's educational literature website.

Amazon has removed many titles after consumer complaints but it's clear that the vast majority remains. Finding the current master list on amazon for her other offerings is not easy as it's been fragmented. There are nearly a thousand under the search Books > Biographies & Memoirs > "Emily Smith", plus hundreds more if you just search under each sub-category.

The resulting search is one hundred (83) pages long and contains the titles of more than 900 books by Ms. Smith (under various publishers including Tebbo and Emereo Publishing), all following the same format. Not all have a search feature but the samples that do show it's usually done in the same fashion, with material in many of these is from Wikipedia.

Her books do not appear to be endorsed by Wikipedia. Nor are they registered with the Library of Congress. No address listing for its publisher, though Emereo's website might give some insight as to their - uhm - business model. "It is all based around the understanding of our target audience who need some understanding of a subject or topic but doesn't want to have to do all the research. Our readers simply want the information presented to in the form of a book or magazine. Our readers want the knowledge instantly without having to wait for books to arrive, or having to go out to the book store. These are the desires, needs and wishes that are fulfilled by Emereo Publishing. We deliver publications on demand.."

It is a hack job, not a masterpiece, so be prepared to not like the content. More so when you learn that only the first couple of pages are devoted to the actor/ actress (depending on how long the Wikipedia entry) and the remaining two hundred pages or so with "chapters" on every show or movie they have ever worked in, any town they ever lived in (the census figures, street grid, high school songs, government offices, and historical highlights will likely be included). In short, any possible key word associated with the subject at hand, no matter how small, will likely become a chapter in Ms. Smith's books, with no rhyme or reason. If it's a keyword in a search, it gets its own chapter, regardless of the content. Cut and paste, simple, no?

Only Wikimedia can verify if they have allowed for reproduction and commercial use of their material - far more than what we as consumers and reviewers can do. This said, know in August 2013 that there are 200 amazon consumers & reviewers who have noticed the material by this author has been copied from Wikipedia and given these books a one star and two star rating, out of a total of 276 consumers who have reviewed her 1,608 books. This shows there is a very high degree of dissatisfaction and concern among consumers about the books' sources and why free online content is being repackaged for sale at amazon. Some efforts were made by amazon to remove inventory but six months later, there's not much progress.

Don't bother complaining about the content being copied - amazon will only allow complaints from authorized agents for the party whose rights have been infringed, which may not be something that Wikimedia can do given their free share platform and how these "authors" are playing the system.

The result - consumers are the ones who are paying for it, dearly. Yes, amazon will apologize, issue a prompt refund (and keep selling the book). But is this really the point? How much is your time worth? Or the disappointment at finding a book that can best double as a doorstopper, without the pictures, interviews, nuggets of inside information you had imagined you would find? They're just not here.

Please don't fall for the trap - simply go online to Wikipedia, read their current entry, and then do a google search for articles that actually make sense. You'll learn far more and you will save yourself a bundle of money and time. Dr.Livingston Gets It !

As a writer, Dr. Gordon Livingston has that rare gift of taking a complex subject and explaining it to the reader in a way that is easy to understand. Gordon makes you examine the topic from what is good for you and what you need to avoid when entering a relationship based on love. His gentle but confronting style forces you to pause and think about your good, bad and ugly relationships. Love is not easy to find or accept but Dr. Livingston gives you an opportunity to explore for yourself how you could have a healthy loving relation. This book should be read by men and women who desire to love and be loved."How to Love" is a treasure that you need to read and share with your friends and loved ones.

Finding The Right Life Partner & Avoiding The Wrong Ones

How to Love

"How To Love" could just as easily have been titled: "Finding The Right Person To Share Your Life With and Avoiding Those Who Can Cause You A Lot of Unhappiness and Pain." Dr. Livingston,a medical doctor and practicing psychiatrist,uses his many years of experience and counseling to teach us how to dramatically increase our odds of finding the right life partner by identifying dangerous behaviors we should be on the lookout for,then pointing out the many essential virtues we should seek.

His short essays on various topics clearly indicate a professional who has had the benefit of hearing many sad stories and sharing that experience to help keep the reader from becoming yet another statistic. Some of the book's headings include:
*The most dangerous food to eat is wedding cake (not that being married is a problem, but sharing a relationship with the wrong person is)
*The trouble with parents is that by the time they are experienced they are unemployed
*If it weren't for marriage,men and women would have to fight with total strangers
It's hard not to like a guy like this.

Two sections really stuck out for me. One was: "No hell is private". It deals realistically with the problems people face when having to deal with drug abuse and how we can become conflicted by wanting to help,yet not losing ourselves in the process.

Another was Dr. Livingston's section on the virtue of kindness. I wrote a book about kindness being a principal road to happiness("Your Unfinished Life").His section on kindness is the best I've read - and I've read many. How would you like to be in love like this:
" In the presence of one disposed to kindness you will notice an absence of guile,an ability to listen,and a disinclination to compete. If you can reciprocate,you will experience a growing feeling of safety and trust. You may find yourself disclosing things about yourself that you previously have been at pains to conceal: fears and vulnerabilities. The need for protection drops away, as does the requirement to be something other than you are. You experience, paradoxically, a growing satisfaction with yourself combined with a desire to be a better person. You feel that a great burden has been lifted from you. You are,at last, good enough. In fact,the image of yourself that you see reflected in your loved one's eyes may be nearly perfect. You would like this moment to last forever. Imagine that."

Dr. Livingston's book is at once a potential lifesaver and a life maximizer, all thoughtfully and eloquently expressed. It would be hard for any reader not to find the Doctor's words speaking directly to many of her or his own life situations, accompanied by wise and experience-based counsel about the best directions to move our lives in next.

idealistic advice

The formula for this genre is always the same: recognize your parent's errors, address their effects on your behavior, become a wonderful person, marry a wonderful person, and rear wonderful children.
Dr. Livingston's book warns those who are looking for love to avoid people who exhibit personality disorders. Full-blown PDs are rare, however.
My experience is that nearly everyone has a touch of something, usually in only one or two realms of their lives, or exhibited only for particular people- someone might be a swell guy, but has insurmountable anxieties concerning sex. Someone else may be everything you ever wanted, but she exhibits near-borderline behavior when her partner wants to discuss money. Yet another may be a fantastic father, but at work he's passive- aggressive.
To instruct those seeking love that they should avoid anyone who is anxious, depressive, controlling, deceptive, moody, touchy, self-centered, etc..., (and that they must not exhibit these all-too-human traits themselves) is simplistic. The book is sweet and nicely written and it's always fun to read about "those" people, but it only made me wistful that my mate and I are far from perfect.

For anyone who is going to the UK to check out Harry Potter sites this book is for you. I only wish I'd had it and all the others when I went there a couple of years ago. It's hard to find some sites and some are well hidden. The tours don't take you to many of them so you are on your own in getting there and finding them.

He has delivered expert testimony in civil and criminal cases, and has submitted expert reports and prepared trial exhibits for computer forensic and cyber-crime cases.

Computer Crime Investigation...Cookbook!

What is your real interest?
If you have a strong background on computer networks, and want to know about 'true' computers forensic, then you should consider books like 'Know your Enemy' or 'Intrusion Signatures and Analysis'. Else, if you are not a computer networks expert or not even a computer professional, and want to have some knowledge about computers forensic, then this can be your book: very comprehensive, not too depth, rich of examples, and, as a bonus, covering several emerging security issues like Wireless Network Analysis and Embedded Systems Analysis.
Note, however that:
- It is not a traditional book, but rather a set of 'essays'.
- The contained material is quite biased, since several explanations seem to be more oriented toward promoting tools than to discuss the areas they are intended for.

You'll find something to like in this collection of essays

I am a senior engineer for network security operations. I bought "Handbook of Computer Crime Investigation" (HoCCI) to expand my knowledge of incident response and digital forensics. While "Incident Response" by Mandia, Prosise, and Pepe remains my top pick, HoCCI contains enough original material to qualify as recommended reading.

HoCCI is a collection of 14 distinct chapters written by 17 authors. The book's main audience appears to be law enforcement personnel, and Academic Press markets the book as a title in its "Forensic Science" catalog. The introduction states the book is written for "forensic examiners" who testify in court, although anyone performing digital forensics will find useful sections.

Some of HoCCI's strengths include numerous case studies. Ch. 2 offers examples of "ineffective" and "effective" disclosure and production of digital records in legal proceedings. Chs. 12, 13, and 14 are dedicated to factual legal and incident response scenarios. Reading these anecdotes, I perceived most of the 17 authors to be extremely familiar with their field.

Beyond helpful case studies, HoCCI provides several strong technical chapters. Bob Sheldon's Windows section (ch. 7) is excellent, and Ronald van der Knijff's embedded systems essay (ch. 11) explains the cutting edge of digital forensics. His discussions of directly reading FLASH and EEPROM memory, and using power analysis to break passwords, are impressive. I enjoyed Steve Romig's explanation of using Cisco NetFlow logs in ch. 4, and found the descriptions of wireless systems in ch. 10 to be useful.

HoCCI is not without faults. Several chapters seem like product advertisements; EnCase is the focus of ch. 3, while NFR's IDS appears in ch. 5. The network analysis section (ch. 9) repeats the much-quoted myth that TCP sequence numbers count packets; they actually count bytes of application data.

Overall, HoCCI is a useful supplement to Foundstone's "Incident Response." HoCCI may spend too many pages describing how to search hard drives for remnants of illicit images, illegal software, or harassing emails. Fortunately, its technical content distinguishes it from "Computer Forensics" by Kruse and Heiser and "Incident Response: A Strategic Guide" by Schultz and Shumway.

Hands-on, immediately applicable to our real-world cases

Eoghan Casey's text is immediately useful. It's not theory, it's practical. It's not biased to one operating system, but covers several technologies. Finally, Eoghan and the book's contributors do not gloss over today's most offensive topics, they address them with vigor and solutions.

I would share one concern: the chapter-long product/vendor discussion. Some reviewers label it marketing; other reviewers don't mention it at all. I'll just forewarn you that you will learn much more about EnCase or NFR than about their competitors.

As a security consultant for Hewlett-Packard, it seems my bookshelf fills up entirely too easily, especially as of the last few years. Therefore, I've gotten fairly selective with new book purchases (until I can get a new bookshelf). However, Casey's text is DEFINITELY worth getting - worth knocking another book off to make room. :)

I hope you enjoy this comprehensive text at least half as much as I do.

A great balance between introductory material and specific algorithms for an engineer

This a great introduction to some of the more cutting edge techniques in recommender systems. It starts with basic structure of various types of recommender systems and then layers in more sophistication. Bayesian methods get a extensive treatment here and explore/exploit techniques are front and center (versus an afterthought in some books and research papers). The treatment of Multi-objective Optimization in recommender systems was unique for a book and very welcome since most real world problems have multiple tradeoffs. If you are an engineer with some statistics knowledge and some patience, you'll find this rewarding.

Good but not great

I am a big fan of the 40k books in general, and this Ominibus is a great deal and I REALLY like that it takes the novels and short stories and puts them in the right order for a chronological read. Compared to the Soul Drinkers series, this one becomes a bit tedious by the last novel-but the writing is solid and the action sequences are quite good.

Warhammer 40k: The Salamanders Omnibus by Nick Kyme

The return to Warhammer!

On the distant volcano planet of Nocturne, resides the fearsome chapter of the Space Marines, Salamanders. Forged in the fires of their world and the essence of their Primarch Vulkan, so of the Emperor, The Salamanders bring death to the foes of the Imperium of Man.

So chronicled the tales in this tome.

The author does a really good job at world building. All of the chapters of Space Marines are unique with a personal battle doctrine and culture that is reflective of the planet from which they call home. The chapter Nick Kyme creates is simply superb. The world of Nocturne and the Fortress Monastery of Prometheus are excellent crafted and there are passages in which one can almost feel the heat of the volcano.

In some of the earlier sections of the book, the author does a good job with balance. Warhammer are not what one would call ‘high literature’ they are pretty much comic books with out pictures. In spite of this, the author does a good job of balancing the frenetic action with passages with a lot of atmosphere. Space Marines are really monks as much as they are warriors and monks typically are a reflective bunch and throughout the book we are treated to some rather poetic passages most often reflective of the desolate majesty of the various planets the Salamanders visit. Again, not high literature, but there is surprising elegance in this Science-Fantasy Series.

One of the reasons the Salamanders are so appealing is their heroism. An acquaintance once said that the thing about Warhammer 40k is that there are no heroes in this universe. Indeed, it is readily apparent that for the majority of mankind. The Imperium of Man is the worst place in the universe to be, save for the realm of Chaos. The death’s of a hundred people are nothing in this universe of trillions, forget merely one. But the actions of the Salamander’s throw a wrench into that philosophy. It is repeatedly mentioned that the Salamanders unusually care about the citizens of the Imperium and this is exemplified throughout the text. This not anything revolutionary in the realm of science fiction literature, in the bleak, oppressive regime of the Imperium, it adds a spark of hope in encroaching darkness.

The Flaws.

Like most the Warhammer books Bookworm has read, the Omnibus has a large ensemble cast and part of the problem with an ensemble cast is that the characters can get a little mixed up so the reader may find themselves turning back to previous chapters with the question, “who was that character again?” It is not helped by the fact that many of the characters have similar sounding names, such as Tsu’gan and Tu’Shan, it is easy to get these characters mixed up among all of the others.

While the books that are chronicled in this volume are all a part of a series, it can become a little grinding. The various battle scenes and as one would expect they are very violent and as the lessons taught to us by Hollywood, gratuitous violence doesn’t work. While not necessarily boring, they just go on and on, and it can get very tiring.

Also the various fire puns get a little worn out near the end.

This may simply be the result of reading a book that is nearly a thousand pages long. So unless the reader is hardcore fan, it may be wise to break up the reading into the various books that make up the omnibus.

Final Verdict:

While it drags in a few places. The characters are memorable and action is exciting and surely a worthy addition to any ones personal Black Library.

Big Bang for your book

This book book contains almost all of the Salamanders Series by Nick Kyme. It includes all but one of the short stories and three books that involve the 18th Legion set in the war hammer 40000 universe. It is a good bargain for those would did buy the for individual books ealier.
