Harvest: Journey’s End is an okay read for a rainy afternoon

The above is the author’s pitch for The Harvest: Journey’s End, the continuation of Harvest: Taken. And continues it does, not as a stand-alone book, but straight on as the next chapter of Dale and Keyno’s life together. But as a stand alone, it falters and ultimately fails to jell as a book.

Not to be a total killjoy , I am fascinated with Ms. Church’s Tah’narian Universe. The Tah’narian’s were an inter-sexed species that suffered the loss of their reproductive abilities after devastating biological warfare. Those that survived lost their “female” reproductive ability, leaving them only with their “male” reproductive equipment intact. All of this was explained in Book One, but it you just start with Book Two, you’ll be scratching your head. Still the concept of a once dual sexed species now stripped of one half of its reproductive ability is a fascinating one, rife with potentials for world building and exploration of a culture split apart.

This never happens. And it is disappointing.

I am always impressed with Ms. Church’s ability to write a sex scene. Usually the scenes are hot, and very expressive. But, but, but, the first three chapters are merely interesting as Dale and Keyno thrash about in the throws of Dale’s first estrus cycle sporting his new baby-making equipment courtesy of a double-dosed Tah’narian DNA infusion. Estrus, with its physical demands on both partners, doesn’t seem fun or sexy at all, despite its logical conclusion. When Dale, concerned about Keyno’s extremely depleted stated afterward asks a friend about it, the friend replies, “Estrus is hard on the one during the servicing.”

Ugh.

And the ability to write a sex scene does not automatically convert into a novel. Despite the potential of Ms. Church’s pitch, without going into spoilers, Keyno and Dale race between home and Keyno’s uncle’s palace, attending the personal crisis of various friends’ dramas surrounding the births of their friends’ children. There is one section where Dale, Keyno and their friends go camping on the planet where Keyno was kidnapped by space pirates in the first book. Is it really a spoiler then to say, “Well, what do you think happens there?” The “devastating secret” devolves into a mini-melodrama where everything is good within a day instead of honestly exploring why Keyno continues to hold back information from his mate. The return to Earth for business and a meet-up with Dale’s parents only highlights the ridiculousness of someone kidnapped for mating purposes accepting his fate without rancor or resentment. “Hey, mom, dad, meet my mate Keyno. Yeah, he was the one that had me kidnapped so I could mate with him, but it’s all good now.” Yeah. In short, while there is plenty of wailing and moaning, there are no real high stakes in the relationship of Dale and Keyno, no real jack-up of tension throughout the book, and no resolution of issues because no real issues are presented.

If you want something lighthearted that doesn’t tax the brain, Harvest: Journey’s End is an okay read for a rainy afternoon.

The Earth trembled the day their skies were filled with Tah’Narian starships. Dialogue between the human race and the aliens eventually hashed out an agreement. We will supply young adult males for several years consecutively to become mates to the Tah’Narians. After they have completed their harvest the aliens will leave Earth alone.

As usual, what typically happens to those taken in the human harvest doesn’t ring true for Dale who’s mated to starship Captain Keyno Shou. On the way back to his new home Dale goes into estrus weeks early to experience the joy and suffering of his body, readying itself for a possible pregnancy.

Going through a male pregnancy is something Dale never, ever in his wildest dreams imagined experiencing. Of course neither did he expect to end up living on another planet mated to a Tah’Narian and loving him. But facts are facts, especially when Dale starts waddling. His human and alien friends are also about to deal with the same issues. Gearing up for parenthood Dale discovers that the adventures, whether scary or fun, are far from over for them all.

Author M.A. Church wraps The Harvest story with another winner in Journey’s End. Incredibly warm, generous, steady Dale handles otherworldly life experiences with aplomb, humor, and strength. The characters as a whole are engaging, alarming, and believable. From chaotic situations to deadly dealings to utter craziness Journey’s End is a powerful tale. Journey’s End is the perfect escape ride. Male alien pregnancies are never the same once this motley crew is done. And, the author is able to make it a believable plot point rather than a gimmick. I Joyfully recommend Journey’s End. So good.

I am a huge mpreg fan so please, don't mind me... but this is an awesome sequel to an amazing story and I am sooooo happy that Dale gets to realize his life as a Tah'Narian and as a father. But there is a but...

This sequel is really all about how the Chosen men adapt in their new life and with new DNA. They share the experience of their bodies changing, of societies not necessarily loving them, more like, tolerating them and of some bigoted few who go all war like and seek to destroy their very presence.

It is not the fault of the Chosen they were chosen to be mates of a people or species who had to make changes in their DNA in order to continue surviving. Because of a war, there is no choice but to seek other humanoid forms to bear their young and so, Dale and the others are it. And they do get preggers and experience so many changes they are confused and afraid. Especially Dale whose double DNA dosing did some weird mambo jambo to his body making him a unique individual who could be feared or be the answer to the existence of the Tah'Narians.

Unlike the first book, this focuses on the lives of the Chosen as I stated before so there are a whole set of stories going on here. Some are connected, some are not, but basically, all tell what their lives are like and so prepares the reader of an eventual sequel (if there is) of more Chosen coming in and getting their chance of happiness at a family life.

I am a bit disappointed though that the focus of this story is all about them and not about the world itself or the promise of a better life in another planet. We are left with an ending that is open and hanging and if there is a third book (hint, hint) I would love to know how they would go about their new lives there in that new settlement or how the new recruit of Chosen adjust to their own changes. If this is really the end? I would be devastated for I have so many thoughts and questions left unanswered.

Decent book, but riddled with silly errors

I purchased this title as a course requirement and have been sufficiently satisfied with it so far. It does provide a wealth of basic information as an introduction to biochemistry. It is highly illustrative, with various diagrams on each page to illustrate the structures and biochemical pathways. The writing style is very lecture-like, but that works well for me when reviewing the material.

What doesn't work so well is the wealth of typos. In a day's study, I have identified no fewer than three typos in 25 pages. Some of the typos are pretty serious: one line says that the amount of oxygen released to tissue by hemoglobin is "98 - 32 = 62%" (the difference is actually 66%). I'm sure the rest of the information is correct, but the typos are seriously distracting.

Not too complicated. Wish the chapters where a little reordered but other than that, it's okay. At least it isn't heavy.

Good introductory read

Required for a class. It explained topics well in an elementary fashion that was good for beginners. It also gave case studies every chapter that remind you of why this topic is important to know about and it helps you relate the information you learn to the real world.
